I am trying to configure a stand-alone, non-networked Windows 2000/XP Pro (dual boot) PC using only dial-up for internet access.

I would like to hide the icon from the system tray that is related to the network cable unconnected etc. The option in network properties is to show or not show the icon when connected. However the icon shows up when it is are not connected.

How do I hide this without removing the NIC?

I'm pretty sure you can remove this icon by going into Settings->Network
and Dialup Connections, right click on the interface in connection and
click on Disable.

Yes you can, I have 2 NICS in my machine a throw back when it ran as my
Broadband Server, one is disabled and doesn't show anymore.
