Network cable disconnected...

Except, it isn't. For some reason Windows is reporting that the cable is
disconnected, when infact its still plugged in and was working yesterday.

Subscribing to replacing the cheapest bits first I replaced the cable with a
known good one and found that it says connected for less than a second then
reports its disconnected again.

So I tried a different port on the switch with both cables, and got the
same; connected momentarily, then disconnected.

OK, maybe its actually the network card, so I try a PCMCIA one (also known
to be good) and after Windows has auto installed it, I try both cables and
both ports on the switch again and get exactly the same thing.

I've now tried 3 other PCMCIA cards, and they all do it too, so I'm thinking
some portion of Windows Networking has become corrupted or something.... Any
ideas anybody???

Thanks very much in advance,

john

Additionally, the port on the hub, switch, or router may be bad... or the
hub, switch, or router may be bad entirely.

Might be NIC settings
RIght click the nic, get properties
click Configure
click advanced
look for link speed or media type
Try to set it to Auto, or 100Full or something in the drop down list.
The switch port may be set to a speed and duplex that the NIC doesn't
like
