network bridge

my toshiba laptop came bundled with xp pro.

nw was pre-config'd with a nw bridge: "local area connection" and "wireless
network connection" were specified as connections for this bridge

could someone explain the basics of nw bridges and why my toshiba was
config'd like this .... ?

i'm guessing that it allows different physical nw adapters to share the same
virtual nw settings
