Network Baiscs Questions

M

Michael Hobbs

I am trying to transfer files from and old machine running W98 to my new one
running XP-ProSP2. These two computers are connected at this time via a
Crossover cable.
I have sevaral questions but two may get me started:

Both of these machines are members of workgroup HOME, yet when i drill down
in Explorer and find HOME I cannot see either machine. In my previous
experience at least the local machine shows up but I can't even see the XP.
SImple file sharing is enabled and MyDocuments is shared, read only. What
could be going on here? Printer and file sharing is enabled in both
machines. Sp2's firewall is disabled.

The second question concerns may I use DHCP for both machines or do I need
to set an IP and Subnet in order to network local machines?

Lastly..... Is there a more appropriate group for basic network issue
questions?

Thank You

Hi Michael,

A popular problem, this!

You are going along the right lines but the biggest problem is that if both
systems are DHCP clients - who is the server?

For a simple copy you're much better off using the NetBEUI protocol which
was designed (some years ago!) for small networks. It will probably be
already there in Win 9x/ME, but to load in XP see this page.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/netbeui.mspx

You could just setup static IP addresses for both but 9x/ME are pretty
useless at using IP in peer-to-peer network without a WINS server handy.

Give this a shot and let us know how you get along.

Hi,
I have the same problem. I have XP Home & W98. Whent he XP PC was new I
managed toset up a network via a hub. I had a nasty virus & had to format C:\
on the XP. Now I can not reinstall the network. I have copied the Netbeui
files as suggested but can not see the option to install the protocol netbeui.
Any thoughts please.

Have no idea from your post what you've done or what you've tried to do but
you might want to have a look at the following if you have not already done
so:

HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301041

If the above doesn't resolve it, you'd probably get better help with this
question on the windowsxp.network_web newsgroup.
