Network and sleep issue

David Qunt

Due to lack of decent nForce 3 drivers for my mobo, on resuming from sleep
in Vista Home Premium I have no internet connection and have to reset the
adapter manually. This requires admin rights. There is no Group Policy or
Local Security Policy editor in Home Premium, so I can't change this..

Is there another way to give standard users permission to reset the network
adapater?

While your setup may differ - if you have the ability to set whether your
Ethernet Controller wakes from shut down or not you may be able to fix this
issue as I did.

Settings\Network Connections\<your network
connection>\Properties\Networking\Configure\Advanced - scroll down to "Wake
From Shutdown' (in the "Property:" table on the left) check under the
"Value:" table on the right to see if it is On or Off.

I still have different issues with the Sleep function, but Hibernate is
working OK for me now since I found, and changed this value to "On". I was
having to reset the connection as you
described, when I resumed from Hibernate.

HTH,

Thanks but I've tried this.

When I go into the "advanced" properties of the network card "Wake From
Shutdown" does not appear in the list.

In the "power management" tab I have unticked "allow the comuter to turn
off this device to save power" so that it is not turned off when
sleeping, but that makes no difference.

Would you mind telling me the manufacturer and version of the drivers
you're using? I'm using the vanilla Microsoft drivers (version 6.2.0.126)
that came with Vista.

I did try loading the 5.04 version of the network driver from nVidia's
site but any attempt to change the Wake on LAN settings (or change any of
the properties at all) resulted in a BSOD and so I reverted to the MS
ones, and the problem of a network refusing to wake up unsurprisingly
returned. However if you can confirm you managed to get nVidia's drivers
to work then I might give that another try.

I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo with inbuilt Marvell Yukon 88E8053
PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controllers. I have downloaded the latest drivers
from Marvell (the download filename is yk60x86_v9.16.2.3.zip) and the
driver version (from Device Manager) is 9.16.2.3.

I do not know if "Wake From Shutdown" was available before I updated the
drivers, as I hadn't looked through the properties list prior to updating.

But if your mobo/ethernet controller is different this info isn't of
much value to you, is it? I assume from your comments that you have an
NVidia controller.

I am using the NVidia driver version 7.15.11.141 from the 101.41
download for my 7900 GS video card.

Yes, that's right - I'm using an Asus K9N mobo which has an nVidia nForce
3 chipset, which contains the NIC. Sorry, I should have said. So that
option wouldn't be available.

If I recall correctly, a similar option was available in the nForce
driver for XP, but for Vista there is only the MS driver (with limited
functionality and appears not to allow the NIC to wake) or the nVidia
5.04 drivers, changing the properties of which which cause me a BSOD.
