Network adapter gets DHCP addr via wireless adapter

Hello

I'm diagnosing a XP Home machine not showing up on other
machines via file sharing.

I notice that the DHCP router provides an address for the
hardwired network adapter as well as the wireless adapter
when connecting via the wireless adapter.

Thus this machine has two entries in DHCP while using
only one wireless adapter.

When the machine first boots up, it will show up in
workgroup computers on other machines, but then promptly
disappears.

Since I have had a lot of problems with this machine I
think there may be a hardware issue. But the machine was
zapped at least twice by infestations of adware, spyware,
etc. So networking was zapped repeatedly by porn dialers.

Will appreciate any suggestions.

Have you considered disabling one or the other adapter, then rebooting to
see if network conditions clear up? If you're using the built-in XP
firewall you should disable it, if a third-party firewall is on the XP
computer you may need to uninstall it for testing purposes.

Hello,

You can not run 2 networks from the same source. It is only going to
mess up your life. Disable the wireless network interface and you should be
good to go. I have tried this with XP Pro and it messes up the same way. You
are creating two paths to the same machine name and this is a no-no in IP
land.
