Netware 5.1 and Windows XP

If you want to install the trial 3-user should change the date of the
BIOS machine before install NetWare (around 2002 is good). For WinXP the
schema work like Win2000 Professional. Install de Microsoft CSNW
build-in WinXP service to connect to the server. If don't can up the
3-lic package, NW usually start with a 1 license build that let you
manage and config the initial parameters. I'm not sure for NW51.
If you have a crossover ethernet cable you can connect a XP or W98
machine to the server, without hub or switch. NW51 need 128 MB RAM
minimun. If you want to work with IP protocol the Ethernet_II trama must
be load.

I have a Novell 5.1 book from that came with a "3 user
version" of Novell 5.1. This book was written pre Windows
XP and I would like to install it on my home network and
goof around with it as I am studying for the Netware 5.1
exam. I have a simple peer to peer network with and XP
Pro desktop, and XP Pro laptop and a Win 98 desktop. I
don't know if or how 5.1 works with Windows XP. Can
anybody shed any light on this for me?

Have you installed the server yet? I believe that a 5.1 3-user
probably has expired by now.
If not, you will need a HUB, four port ethernet is fine. NetWare
doesn't do Peer to Peer.
And to connect to the server from your XP workstation once you have it
up and running you need Netware client. You can add the Microsoft
client for Netware in the control panel, but I wouldn't recommend it if
you are studying for the exam. You can download the NetWare 32bit
client for XP/Win2k at:
http://support.novell.com/produpdate/patchlist.html#client
The version 4.9SP2 is the latest, but the 4.83SP# might be a better fit
for NetWare 5.1. What Service Pack do you have of NW5.1, SP!? You
might want to get SP7 whie you are at Novell. It can be downloaded at:
http://support.novell.com/produpdate/patchlist.html#nw
good luck and have fun with it

Thanx for all your help, but this is way too over my
head. If I had a 'throwaway' set of machines on which to
run this stuff, I'd do it, but I depend on my little P2P
network a little to much to experiment like that!

Thanx again,

Rip

You can just download the latest 6.5 with slipstreamed (overlay) servicepack
2 -

it includes a legal demo license.

Netware will work with a crossover cable, but if you want to setup a real
lab at home, at least get a hub.

Products http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/2969164.htm

just follow the instructions, go pure IP (no need for ipx with netware since
98 anyways) & you should be fine. If you want documentation you can check
out http://www.novell.com/documentation & an inexpensive guide can be found

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let you know there is a site that may be of some use. A
lot of people who work with Novell products, and are VERY good with
implementations and troubleshooting, frequent the site. You can find it at:
