.NETFramework 1.1

Guest

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2, IE7. I receive a number of error messages that
mention .NETFramework 1.1 and ASP.NET. Can I uninstall .NETFramework 1.1 and
then reinstall it as simply as I can uninstall other programs/software, i.e.,
my printer, Windows Media Player, etc?

If not, could you tell me what I'd have to do?

What specifically are the messages that you get?

You can uninstall it. It's not essential to the running of Windows, but it
may cause one or two of your programs to stop functioning properly, if you
do.

It is uninstalled, as other programs, through Add/Remove programs. What
problems and error messages are you receiving?

I'm sorry . . . I don't understand them so I don't read them in their
entirety, just the titles and sub-titles. There are 3 different messages and
they all refer to .NETFramework 1.1, ASP.NET, but some refer to Dr. Watson
debugging. When they do pop up, my computer freezes and I have to press the
reset button on my tower to restart it, then proceed again until another one
pops up. I also get updates for .NETFramework 2.0 and Windows NT, which I
don't have installed.

Hi Christopher,

You and Rock asked me the same question so I responded under his reply
instead of saying the same thing twice. Basically, I don't understand them
when I read them so I don't know what they say. I read just their titles and
subtitles.

Hi Jon,

If you reinstall the framework then there shouldn't be a problem for
programs that require it.

J

Jon

You're welcome.

BTW if you look under

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
and then at the 'Application' node, you may also spot some of the error
messages you have received. You can double-click copy them to the clipboard.

Also try pressing Ctrl-C when one of those error dialog boxes pops up and
pasting it into notepad (ctrl-V).

If you then paste some of the error messages in here, people will be in a
better position to advise you further.

Next time when you have an error and need help with it, it's important to
record and post the error message verbatim. There are many error messages
with different causes and resolutions.

Also if you look in the logs in Event Viewer the error messages might be in
there, too.

..Net framework, is only required on your system if you have a program
installed which requires it. XP doesn't need it, per se. If you uninstall
it, then the program that needs it won't run properly or at all.

There are different versions of .Net: 1.1, 2.0, 3.0. Some programs require
a specific version.

I doubt if updates for Windows NT are being installed. You should be
careful in making assumptions about interpreting something you see on the
system.

Thanks Jon . . . I never knew that existed.

These are the messages that I received from Event Viewer (Application and
System). There weren't any items under Security and Internet Explorer. They
error messages didn't take the same form as those in Event Viewer. I pasted
below one of each error but there were many of all of them (8 to 10) each day.

There's one entry in that list that refers to a service 'hpdj00' failing to
start - that one could well be malware-related. Doing some scans eg with
Spybot and Adaware, plus googling for 'hpdj00' may help to clear that up.

Also you have a few disk errors in the list, so I would also run chkdsk.
[Right-click drive in My Computer > Properties > Tools > [Error checking]
Check Now ....

You can view the results of the chkdsk in Event Viewer too (a 'Winlogon'
entry from memory (?))

I just received a Windows Explorer message but Control + C and Control + V

The key information there is the name of the module causing the problem ie
'mpeg2dmx.ax'.

I would locate that file on your system, and uninstall whatever program
introduced it.
[Possibly 'DVD X Copy Platinum' from a quick Google]

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your help. I did a search, including hidden files and folders
and system folders, first for mpeg2dmx.ax, then for DVDXCopy and lastly for
platinum. Each search came up empty. Any ideas????? I've been watching
videos on my computer a lot lately (VLC Media Player) so it stands to reason
it probably has something to do with a video program but I don't understand
why mpeg2dmx.ax doesn't appear in a search if it's the file that's causing
the problem. Could it be that my computer is freezing because I don't have
the file? That it somehow got deleted (not intentionally by me)?

Hi Denise

It's odd that it doesn't turn up in a search, but I suspect it is there on
your system, since the error messages indicate that Windows is finding the
file (giving you the version numbers and error offsets etc).

Try looking in these 2 folders, as a first port of call.

C:\WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS\system32

Failing that, try looking in subfolders of 'Program Files' (especially
within media program folders)

If it still doesn't turn up, then that would be odd. The file may have been
renamed (while internally being the same file).

[[If you're comfortable with the registry, then you can also try searching
in there. [Start > Run > Regedit], which may also reveal the path to the
file.]]

If you do manage to locate it, then check its creation date [eg via Details
view in Explorer, change the columns if necessary]. Compare that to the
creation dates of folders in Program Files, and you may be able to identify
the culprit.

One of your earlier error messages, also indicated the possible use of
'Media Player Classic' (mplayerc.exe), so if that's a new edition, you may
want to consider what was installed alongside it.

Also back up all your important files (which is always worth doing) and run
the disk checks I mentioned earlier. Your disk may be on the blink.

Lastlly, one of your other error messages indicated a crash by Sygate
Firewall. So you could also try uninstalling that, and seeing if that
resolves the problem (reinstalling if it's not). I also use this firewall,
but had some problems with a couple of recent versions of it, and so still
currently use an older version of it [5.5.2516].

:

You're welcome.

BTW if you look under

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
and then at the 'Application' node, you may also spot some of the
error
messages you have received. You can double-click copy them to the
clipboard.

Also try pressing Ctrl-C when one of those error dialog boxes pops up
and
pasting it into notepad (ctrl-V).

If you then paste some of the error messages in here, people will be
in a
better position to advise you further.

That's what I'm planning on doing, uninstalling then reinstalling
it.
Thanks.

Hi Jon,

Why would some of my programs stop functioning if I reinstall it?

If you reinstall the framework then there shouldn't be a problem
for
programs that require it.

Right now I have .NET Framework 1.1 with Hotfix (KB886903). Can I
uninstall
.NET Framework 1.1 and Hotfix KB886903 and reinstall them? Or are you
saying
that there are different versions of .NET Framework 1.1?

Well in a sense there are different versions of .Net 1.1 - before and after
the hotfix update. Yes you can uninstall both, start with the hotfix, then
..Net. Then reinstall.

I checked into 1.1. I downloaded NETFramework 1.1 Redistributable, which
contains dotnetfx. I also downloaded NETFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1, which
contains NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86. I also downloaded the NETFramework 1.1
Hotfix KB886903. Just to be on the safe side, I thought I'd ask before I did
any installing . . . I know that I have to install the hotfix but do I need
to install both Redistributable and Service Pack 1

Set a restore point. Unistall all the .Net 1.1 entries from Add/Remove
programs. Reboot. Install .Net 1.1 Redistributable. Reboot. To be sure
go to windows update. It will show you the updates. Should have .Net 1.1
SP1 and the Hotfix. Install the oldest one first, I think that's the SP1.
Install from your copy, not from windows update. Reboot. Go back to
windows update. Scan again. Repeat
