Chuck said:Error 1068 says that a service that TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper depends upon was
not
started. Look on the Dependencies tab, under "This service depends...".
Mine
shows two entries:
1) AFD Networking
2) NetBT
Each of those services may, in turn, depend upon other services. If you
find a
service that's not running, try to start it. If it won't start, check the
Event
Log, and provide the complete error message here.

Thanks for the response. Under Dependencies are
1) AFD Networking
2) NetBios
I cannot find either of these listed in services. ( I have an Italian system
and some of the names are slightly different, but even so I think I would
find them. if they were there).
In the Event log four things keep reccuring . Two seem to refer to GFI
Nework Management Monitor; I disinstalled it becuase I can't get the
network up so I can monitor it
The others are
Error 7000 (I translate) NetBEUI was not opened since it was not possible
to find the file.
Error 7001 NetBios Helper was not opened since it is not associated with
any any active accesory.
I am not sure how to post the event log and it is in Italian.
Is the failure of NetBios loading likely to be a cause of my problems
outlined in post Network Address? below?
Hope you can help.
Chuck said:Lee,
OK, that's a start. Following the tree of services backwards is not an
easy
task - Windows uses at least 2 different labels to identify each service.
For service research I find it simpler to use PsService (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/psservice.shtml>, and run
"psservice
config" which gives a list of all services by service name, and
dependencies for
each.
But let's look at something else first. Start by removing any extraneous
protocols from the list of items under Local Area Connection Properties.
You
only need the following items in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
And make sure that you're running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area
Connection -
Properties - TCP/IP - Properties - Advanced - WINS).
Thanks, Chuck.
I have only those items you mentioned running on the XP machine and the same
on the laptop (apart from the QoS which is not present since it is on W98).
NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is ticked on both machines - but this is greyed out
(although ticked) on the W98.
I have installed PsService

Huh. I wonder what the NetBEUI reference is then? NetBEUI is a protocol
similar to TCP/IP + NBT, but not routable and not subject to firewalls.
It's
use frequently causes odd problems, like maybe yours.
Copying from an Event Log entry is simple. Under Event Properties, on the
right, there's an Up Arrow, a Down Arrow, and a Clipboard button. Click
on the
Clipboard button, and the entry in question is copied to the clipboard.
Then
just Paste here.

Let's check for LSP / Winsock corruption, if your problems continue.
Warning:
If GFI does hook into your Winsock stack, you may have to reinstall GFI.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259
If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into
the
command window.
Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.
If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the
command
window.
Success! I went through the procceses you outlined above, but had no
success so I went back to the Events log and thought I should try to find
out more about that bsaspi32 error. I don't know what it is but I
tracked it down in System/Hardware/Hidden Devices where it was showing a
yellow tag. I risked deleting it and rebooted. It didn't just work
straight away but with a bit of tweaking I now have the Lan up and running.
Many thanks for your help. I should never had got it going without your
input.
Regards
Lee
