net view \\servername fails with "remote procedure call failed"

Hi all,

I have a wicked problem that has been doing my head in over the past
few days.

For the sake of simplicity I will reduce the problem a bit. We have 3
subnets of
192.168.0.0/24
192.168.1.0/24
192.168.2.0/24
connected via VPN. Each subnet has a Windows 2000 server (with all SP
and Hotfixes). Let's call them server0, server1 and server2
respectively, with IP addresses 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 and
192.168.2.1.

Each server is configured as a WINS server with server0 having
replication schedule with the other 3.

Now, we can ping the servers from one another without problems, so for
example
from server0, ping server1, ping server2 resolves fine, and packets get
through.

BUT, from server0
net view \\server1 works but
net view \\server2 does not

LIKEWISE, from server2
net view \\server0 fails

In both cases the error message is "Remote Procedure Call Failed". I
can't see any firewall issues (IPSec and TCPIP Filtering is off in Lan
settings), and the fact that I can ping and remote desktop to the
machine without any lag indicates that there are no weird packet delay
issues across VPN that could be causing it.

To make matters worse, even though server0 cannot successfully execute
net use \\server2
and machine on that subnet (192.168.0.0/24) can!

Both, server0 and subnet machines have identical WINS settings.

I am baffled. I have checked and rechecked WINS config - all seems
fine, but there are 4102 Event Errors in the logs. However, I am
suspecting that these are occuring because of the problem, not the
other way around.

Any help would be appreciated,

Regards,

Amer
