Net Send

There are several XP boxes on our network that cannot
send or receive via Net Send after bootup or a reboot.
The messenger service is running and set to automatic
start. Yet if I stop/start the messenger service on these
computers it works fine until the next bootup or reboot.
When sending from a working PC you get the 2273 error
about alias not found. But when I do the stop/start on
the nonworking PC then everything is fine.
Anyone have any idea what this could be?

I saw this in the kb and it basically says that the
messenger service is not running which in my case it is.
Yet if I stop the service and then start it net send
works. I did find another clue yesterday. If I send the
pc a message right after logging in it works. But if I
wait a while (I'm thinking after all the services are
started) net send stops working until I stop/start the
messenger service again. It's as if something else,
possibly another service is canceling out the messenger
service but not stopping it.
I'm assuming no one has ever had this because I've posted
it in many places and all I get is that "the messenger
service must be running". I hate to think that I have to
rebuild these pc's just because net send doesn't work. We
use net send for internal system alerts and only 3 of 53
PC's are doing this.
Thanks for any help you have given and may have.

Hi Ken,

Have you checked to verify that the Alerter service was set as well. If so,
are both Manual or Automatic?

If there isn't any third party software disabling the service(s)?

The keys are listed here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Messenger
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Alerter

"Start"=dword:0000004 is disabled
"Start"=dword:0000003 is manual
"Start"=dword:0000002 is automatic
