I'm an everyday user of Windows XP doing everyday tasks. I don't program or
know how to program. I continue to receive updates for the subject software
and I'm curious to know why I need this or do I need this and if not can it
be removed and free up my PC? I can't seem to find this answer anywhere.

The .net framework runtime is used in many apps. Leave it alone.

in general. Search for "dotnet". And when you post there, include your
question.... uh, if you have one.

The .net framework is a set of run time files used by any program
written with .net. It doesn't matter whether you program or not; if
you run programs written with .net you need this file (actually
several different versions of the.net framework; one version doesn't
always substitute for an earlier one).

I don't know whether you run any such programs, but if you do, and you
remove the needed .net framework file, the programs will fail to work.
And if you don't run any such programs, you probably will soon; they
are more and more common.

Besides, these files take very little disk space. Don't remove them.

If a .NET Framework version is installed, it's needed by other installed
applications.

If it's a critical security update or Service Pack, you should install it.
