.NET Framework

My question is what is .NET framework and what does it do? It appears when
updates were done over night I got a message on the desktop stating
application has generated an exception that could not be handled" and it
tries to install document viewer but then nothing happens and message will
not go away. What does this mean? What should I do? Thanks for your help.

..Net is part of Microsoft's very ambitious plans for the internet. It
remains to be seen whether these plans will actually come into being. For
now, the project has produced some nifty programming tools that are becoming
increasingly popular with programmers. Software written with these
programming tools requires that something called the .Net Framework be
installed on users' computers.

You can get the .Net Framework in one of two ways: directly from Microsoft
via Windows update, or when you install a program that needs the .Net
Framework to run. Either way, it's part of Windows internal plumbing and
nothing at all to be concerned about.
