.NET 3.5 Install server not responding

I have Vista Home and already have .NET framework 1.1 installed. When
I try to install .NET 3.5, the progress bar goes to 100% but it never
completes. My computer eventually becomes non responsive and I have
to reboot. When Vista boots up again, it does some configuration
before the login screen then shows me an Installing dialog box. After
an hour or so, it eventually pops up an error message saying "Install
server not responding" and I can retry or cancel. I tried this
install twice already with the same results. I really want to trash
Vista even more now because this didn't happen on my XP machine.

Right click the .NET 3.5 setup executable and click Run as Administrator. If
that does not work, temporarily disable User Account Control (Control Panel
User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off) and try installation
again.

Turns out that even after a successful .NET 3.5 installation, on a
reboot I still get the Windows Installer box that is Preparing to
install.. forever and eventually says that the Install server not
responding. I don't understand how this Windows Installer is
starting. There is nothing in msconfig or the registry to initialize
the installer
