.net 2.0 and McAfee

Tom Swanick

Hi all,

I have finished banging my head on this one. I am using VS 2005 asp .net to
build web pages. I have always had McAfee Internet Security Suite 7.0 (minus
the privacy service) installed and everything was fine. Over the weekend,
McAfee decided to upgrade me to their new version. It's an automated process
over the internet so I just followed the simple instructions - again I did
not install the privacy service.

Now I cannot load any pages I build (I am using the VS local web server not
IIS) due not 'Cannot Find Server or DNS Error'.

Even a simple page with one word will not load. I know that privacy service
causes some issues, but it cannot if it is not installed. Also, everything
was OK 5 mins. before the upgrade but not directly after, so it can't just
be a coincidence. I have spoken with live techninians in McAfee but that was
a complete waste of time.

I'm desperate -- help!!

Very similar issue with NOD32. I just configured NOD32 not to check *.aspx
file and stopped internet protection (but I don't remember exactly - one
thing is sure - check your AV configuration and try to guess what should be
turned off)

My version of McAfee has a firewall built in that blocks specific ports. You
might check there make sure it's not blocking port 80 (or any other port you're
using.)

Thanks Mike,

Tried that also, still getting nowhere.

At least I got somebody from McAfee on their forums to aske what version I
had. It's a start I suppose.

A start would be to turn og "friendly" error messages in IE.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Show Friendly HTTP error messages

This will cause IE to display a more helpfull error message that may well
help you to diagnose the problem.

If that doesn't help I would disconnect from the internet and then i would
start disabline/uninstalling McAffee stuff until you can get it to work.

In general the only thing really worth having is a small basic anti virus
program that protects email and files and then making sure your patching is
up to date. Most add in firewall software doesn't offer much extra usefull
protection over and above what is in the basic Windows XP firewall and you
can avoid spyware by simply not installing it.

Yep, I'm aware of that. I'm pretty confident it's not a port blocking issue.
It's just that the latest Mcafee upgrade is a complete disaster apparently.
Go to the Mcafee forums to see.
