Neophyte question about workgroups

I have 5 databases that my team uses for their daily production, 4 of these
databases are unsecured. I have 1 database that I have secured and have
setup a workgroup to give permission to what part of the database the user
can access and to track when the information was entered in to the database.
In order for someone to use the secured database they have to join the
Workgroup on the Server. When this is done they login box pop ups and they
have to use a log in and password. After they close the database and open a
none secured database they are still getting the log in box because they are
still Join to the Secured Workgroup. It is possible to have them be Joined
to their local Workgroup but still have access to the Secured with out
getting the “You don’t have permission..." error message, when accessing the
none secured database?

Hi Raj,
In order for someone to use the secured database they have to join the
Workgroup on the Server.

By default (at installation), Access is joined to system.mdw located on your
local drive. This workgroup file is placed on your local drive at
installation time. You can join a different workgroup using two methods:
1. wrkgrpadm.exe. Joining a workgroup file this way actually changes your
default workgroup. Access would retain this for future sessions (unless you
change it again OR you override it using the below method)
2. you can override the workgroup file used in Access at any time using the
command line parameter /wrkgrp in your desktop shortcut.

I think what you have done is changing the workgroup default to the
workgroup on the server (Method 1), you should have just used Method 2 by
creating a shortcut with the /wrkgrp parameter. The use of the shortcut
method allows you to use any workgroup for any .mdb at any time.

Please browse through this newsgroup for the specific syntax of using the
shortcut method as I cant think of it off the top of my head. It may even be
explained in the Access security FAQ which, by the way, is a must for you to
read if you start securing Access database. You did read it, didnt you? If
you didnt, see if your "secured" database is really secured, because many
people secure their database without using the FAQ and ended up realizing
that their data is really not secured because they missed a step in the FAQ.
