negative virtual memory?

My Toshiba M-55 laptop has been running right slow. Poking around in that
"know just enough to get myself in trouble" fashion, I found a report that my
virtual memory had a large negative value : -1960 MB with no part of 1688 MB
available. My computer is acting like it had a stroke (long delays before
typed text shows up, just overall right slow.) and thats a drag 'cause I need
it for class. I'm a little out of my depth here by thinking the two issues
are connected, so hopefully someone can help solve this mystery of mine

Try ctrl+alt+delete key stroke to bring up Windows Task Manager. Then click
Processes tab and look under CPU. See what is using CPU cycles. Most times
System Idle Process will be 98-99% which is for the most part normal.
Identify the cycle hog and End process if you can.
