I'm looking for suggestions to make it harder or impossible to fill my
guestbook with spam - usually long lists of pornographic website links
or commercial (spam) web sites for pharmaceuticals.

I know how to go into the guestlog and erase them, but get tired of
daily having to clean it out.

Any suggestions?

Sure, do what I did years ago, do away with the guest book. They are more
trouble that they are worth. If someone really wants to send you a message,
they can do it through regular email.

Guest books and hit counters are 2 toys that have no value on 99% of
websites IMHO

If you are using the Front Page Guestbook component,
short of removing the guestbook, not much.

I would assume you could write your own guestbook that
would look through the visitor inputs and reject it if it
contained certain keywords.

Take a look at my posting "How can I forbid Hyperlinks in FrontPage Guestbook
entries?", from 12/27/04 9:03 AM PST. It is about seven postings before
yours. We have a few good ideas running there on how to solve the generic
guestbook spam problem.

It looks like guestbooks are becoming popular targets as
well as mailto: and forms by email.

Server Extensions were not functional on my site when I
created the guestbook. What I did was create my own using a
DB, a DRW, and a form. Not too hard to implement if you
want to start over. The information from guestlog.htm
should not be too hard to recover and add to the DB. In
light of the recent spat of questions regarding this
subject, I am now using the form to send the entry to me via
an html email form. I would then need to click submit on
the email for the entry to be made into the guestbook
database.

Start reading "How can I forbid Hyperlinks in FrontPage Guestbook entries?"
just a few posts below yours.

It should be clear to everybody that the spam bots have identified the
FrontPage tinker toy code signature which is why you are all getting smacked
all of a sudden and the news is traveling fast...

Amen to that!

Mike the thread that you mentioned had not posted on my server when I
logged in and began reading and later posted my question. I was quite
surprised to see that two of us were fed up enough with guest book
spamming to write virtually at the same time. I am looking at all the
responses to both posts and deciding if the web site can live without a
guest book or if I can handle what would be required to implement
CAPTCHA technology.
