problems creating a guestbook!

G

Guest

I have found this explanation on how to create a guestbook:

File->new
Click More Page Templates from the task pane on the right.
Choose Guestbook template

Edit the page to suit your website. Do not remove the word [guestlog]
near the bottom of the page - this is a place holder for your users
comments.

Save the page, change the filename to suit.

Refresh the Folder list by pressing F5.

BUT HOW DO I DO THIS (see explanation below!!)????????????????

Find, and drag the file guestlog.htm into the _private folder. This must be
done since the guestlog.htm needs write permissions which are (normally)
only available in the _private folder. guestlog.htm will be in the
folder containing your new guestbook.

Where do I find "the_private folder"? I don't think I have a folder called
that. The web site is: http://home.no.net/ise82/

My problems are:
- none of the pictures (or gifs) I saved in FrontPage shows on the web
- it is not possible to submit a comment

The remote server must have the FP extensions and you must publish to the server via FP's File Menu
| Publish Web / Site command to http://home.no.net/ise82

Your images are huge! I looked on Friends and one or two other pages.
Over 180000 bytes for an image - the images I checked should be around 5000
bytes, at most. The images should be optimised in a graphics program, and
considerably reduced in size (filesize).

The Guestbook page was either FTPd to the server, or the server does not
have FrontPage extensions installed. It must be published using HTTP to a
server with FrontPage extensions, or created on that server.
If you FTP'd the page, did you also upload the images?

http://home.no.net/ does have FrontPage extensions, and if this is the root
folder of the web site the _private folder will be there.
If this is not the root folder of your site, then your host should make your
site a proper web, or sub web, at present it appears to be just a folder.

This is what I do now:
1. open frontpage
2. open the "suit"-folder
3. click "file menu", "publish site"
4. Then it says: "Remote Web Site Properties"
5. I choose "frontpage or sharepoint services"
6. I have to type a username and a password - DOES NOT WORK.

Any advice?

I've never created a homepage before, and FrontPage is new to me... :blush:/

I know they're huge.. But I don't know how to "optimise" images, nor how to
reduce the filesize.

Thank you so much for trying to help me, but I don't understand much from
what you guys are writing.. Too difficult "computer-language". Obviously, I
should have thought of that before I started this homepage-project.

But anyway. I'll contact my host, or I'll contact someone who I THINK is my
host :)
Thanx.

Sometime very soon, you should visit your favorite
bookstore and pickup a copy of "Microsoft Front Page 200x
Inside Out" by Jim Buyens. Purchase the edition of the
book that covers your version of Front Page.

You will save yourself a lot of headaches.

Look at these pages:

In addition to the graphics programs recommended in the links and tutorials
above, there is also Irfanview (www.irfanview.com), which is freeware.

According to
http://home.no.net/ise82/_vti_inf.html
Your hosted site Does not have the FP Server Extensions
You can not use any of the FP components that require the FP SE
See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=281532
To publish you need to use FTP mode
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825503&Product=fp2003

PS
Also remove all spaces and illegal punctuation (&) from file names
