Need to repair IE 6 in XP

R

Richard Goh

I have a customer that has fairly new DELL with Win XP and IE6.
It will not display any web site background color or colored font.
She is trying to use a custom server to produce a web page of her own, but
most of the server tool pages do not work because of the inability of her IE
to display any background colors or colored fonts. The same server site
works fine on her husbands computer, but it is a very old - slow computer.

I have done the following:
* Confirmed that it will not display background colors or special colored
fonts. (test on 4 sites that have these features)
* I checked the color button on the "general" page of the "Internet Options"
dialog window. When I select use "Windows colors" the two small buttons
turn gray.
* I have tried the MS IE6 with SP1 upgrade disk.
* I have tried the run command "sfc /scannow"
* I have tried to spoof the registry to accept an repair re-install
* I have updated the video card driver.

Any other hints or tips? I would like to uninstall IE and reinstall IE
before trying a repair installation of XP
The computer is a DELL computer and has the XP restore disk, but she does
not have a CD burner and has not backed up her personal files.

I have also check the accessibility tab in IE Options and the box that would
ignore web colors is not checked

Hi Richard :)

Try the following information:

See here for information regarding Install/Uninstall information:
Noel's IE Install/Uninstall
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

(See the section for XP below:)

Repair IE ( Does not work for XP - see below)

1. Close all Internet windows and programs, then the Click the Start tab
on the bottom task bar.
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click on Add/Remove Programs
5. Find and highlight your IE version in the list
6. Click the Add/Remove tab on the dialog box under the window
7. When the Wizard window opens you should see a Repair Internet Explorer
8. Click the radio button or box next to it, then click OK
9. Let it run the repair
10. Reboot you computer

or

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as
follows:

or

For XP Repair of IE - Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

Per Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP (Q318378)
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;Q318378

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, IE6 does not show in the add/remove list.
The "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance" line did not work, computer
reports it cannot find setupwbv.dll.

I am sorry that none of the information was of help. If you had WinME, I
could perhaps help you further with totally eliminating all traces of all IE
versions, but, I don't know that much about WinXP. Thus, I will have to
leave further advisement to those who are more familiar with your version of
Windows.

Thank you for trying, and I hope you will be able to resolve your problem
soon.:)

Not sure if this is of assistance to you Richard considering there is no WinXP
CD but I leave it up to you, ideas only.

To Reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following
command:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf
or
Do a search for the ie.inf file, right-click it and choose install.(you'll need
to insert the WinXP CD), if you don't have a CD you will need to know where the
I386 folder is and in some cases where the ServicePackFiles folder is (which is
usually under the Windows folder).

So? You aren't reporting anything unexpected and Jan listed what
you should try otherwise; so what would be more interesting to see
from you is what happened with those *other* suggestions.
Did you just stop reading when the first idea failed?

Here is a more recent suggestion I have been giving to XP users
who want to try some repair procedures.

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from Windows Update</TITLE>
< http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831429 >

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

BTW I was just replying to your question about repairing XP.
FYI the symptom you are trying to change is a common symptom
of malware. You haven't mentioned if you have done any scans
or checks along that tack. The only "exploits" in this regard that I am
aware of affect the settings that you have already checked but I think
it certainly couldn't hurt making sure that this is not a factor.

I have seen your symptom reported at least once elsewhere but can't
remember the details. I have a vague idea that there is a circumvention
but not a fix. Try a Google Groups search. It would have been in here
or in ie6.setup.

Good luck

Thanks for the effort.
We have run Adaware and Spybot on the computer and removed all suspected
references. No luck.
We have tried the Windows and IE updates. No luck
We have tried the sfc /scannow and used the XP disk. No luck
We have tried the "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance". No such file as
setupwbv.dll found.
I will try the "verify MS hotfix" program today and will try to set up
another user in case her profile is corrupted.

You can try to re-register the files associated with IE.

You can make this into a BAT file and run it from the C:\Windows\System32
folder

regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /s /u
regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /s
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll /s /u

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll /s
regsvr32 browseui.dll /s /u
regsvr32 browseui.dll /s
regsvr32 msrating.dll /s /u

regsvr32 urlmon.dll /s /u
regsvr32 urlmon.dll /i /s
regsvr32 webcheck.dll /s /u

regsvr32 appwiz.cpl /s /u
regsvr32 appwiz.cpl /s
regsvr32 shell32.dll /s /u
regsvr32 shell32.dll /s
exit

This will unregister (the /u) and re-register the above files silently (/s).
There are a lot more, but these core files should do the trick.
Worth a shot anyway. If that fails, re-installing Windows XP over the top
of itself (or re-installing the service pack) is your next step.

Jim.
