My computer is crashing about every 15 minutes. I want to reinstall windows
but it won't let me because it says I have a newer copy of windows than the
disk that I have. I can't make another recovery disk at this time. I have
service pack 2 installed right now. The recovery disk only has service pack
1. How do I go about reinstalling windows.

Hi Sandman101,

You need to make up the files and folders you want and do a reformat and
reinstall of Windows XP Home Edition.

If the CD is a true Windows install CD, you need to boot the PC with the CD as
the start-up boot disk. Trying the re-install XP SP1 while still running XP
Sp2 gives you this message.

If you have a Recovery CD, then you do not have a choice of re-installing XP.
Recovery CDs only give you a method of replacing the installed version with an
image of the hard drive at the time the recovery CD was created.

Any version of XP with SP2 installed is considered a "newer" version
compared with XP without SP2.
If you installed SP2 ,you may have the option of uninstalling it via the
Control Panel, doing so will permit using the XP CD.
The other choice is to "slipstream" the SP2 files with the XP CD. Google
for "slipstream".
Of course you should try to solve "crashing" behavior - problem may still
exist after reinstallation of Windows.
