I am working on a nasty repair. (Please reply via news NNTP - email
address above is bogus).
The PC's Motherboard died (Windows XP), so I replaced it, but was not
able to replace it with the exact match (MB or CPU).
I would like to salvage the current XP installation so as to not have
to re-install new - but will re-install new as a last resort.
The PC boots up to the screen where I get the choices:
--------------------------------------
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration....
Start Windows Normally
--------------------------------------
None of these choices boot properly - either because the last boot
with the old MB was unsuccessful - and/or the new MB is preventing XP
to boot.
The PC is a MICRON PC (Millennia GA-7DX) , and I have the Operating
System Recovery CD (one CD). I do not have a Windows XP Home CD - the
PC didn't come with one.
When I run the recovery CD, I can choose to Repair the existing OS, or
install new.
Choosing Repair basically doesn't work - it asks me which volume has
the OS on it, I enter the Administrative password (I had to reset it
to null with "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor" at,
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
then it dumps me to a DOS prompt at C:/WINDOWS - and that's it - no
more.
I haven't tried to re-install new - and that brings me to my question.
If I were to re-install new - I would have to wipe out the main single
partition. My gut feeling tells me that the XP OS files are ON THAT
PARTITION, and not on the Recovery CD. The Recovery CD is only 473MB.
Does anyone know what's what here?
Does the Operating System Recovery CD actually have the full Windows
XP Home distribution on it - is the CD all I need for a new Install?
Or are the files really on the Hard Drive - and if I wipe the
partition - well - I will have wiped them too.
I read on the MICRON PC site that if the motherboard changes, the
Recovery CD won't work (BIOS Locking) - that can explain the restore
error. Can I still install new? If yes - where would I get the XP
files for new install from?
Any answers and guidance greatly appreciated.
