Need to reinstall windows XP, but don't have disc

Susan

Hi,

I need to reinstall windows becuase my computer is just really slow and I
can't install new programs. I can't use many of my already installed
programs anymore either. I've tried a system restore, but I can't go back
far enough in time to before this all started.

I no longer have my windows XP installation disc that came with my Dell
Computer. Does anyone know of any other way to handle this? I don't know if
I can download and install windows to a CD and reinstall to my computer??
I'm afraid to try because I don't want to mess anything up. I'm not exactly
a whiz at this type of thing. I get around very well, when I run into
problems, I'm stuck!!

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate your help! Thanks!!!

Yes. Call Dell and order a replacement disc. There will be a modest
charge.

If you happen to know someone who has a genuinely identical Dell model,
their disc may work.

Nope. You need an install CD.

On the back or bottom of your Dell is a sticker that says "Service Tag" and
has numbers and letters. Those will identify the exact model and
configuration to Dell, so you can order for the correct system.

Just call Dell and order the CD. You will also need the drivers, this will
either be a separate disc or you can use the Service Tag at the Dell support
site and be directed to a page with the correct drivers for your system.

If Dell sends you a "System Recovery" disc instead of an XP Install disc,
you won't need the drivers separately; these will be built-in.

A new install may or may not solve your problem. Try another approach
and discover why it is slow.

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

What is the CPU speed?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Are there any problems indicated in the System and Application logs?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I need to reinstall windows becuase my computer is just really slow and I
can't install new programs.

In my view, reinstalling Windows because you have a problem is most
often the wrong approach--a serious mistake. Besides being a lot of
trouble, if you reformat and reinstall without finding out what caused
your problem, you will very likely repeat the behavior that caused it,
and quickly find yourself back in exactly the same situation.

My recommendation is to describe your situation and problems here in
detail and, it's likely that one of us can help you solve. Worst case,
you may have to reinstall, but you should treat it as a last resort.

I can't use many of my already installed
programs anymore either. I've tried a system restore, but I can't go back
far enough in time to before this all started.

I no longer have my windows XP installation disc that came with my Dell
Computer. Does anyone know of any other way to handle this? I don't know if

No. Contact Dell. They should be able to provide you with a CD, but
there will be some charge (probably not very great).

Thanks for your input everyone. You are so much help. I think I know when
the problem started. I installed reg cure about a year ago because my
computer was getting very slow. It really sped things up, but that seems to
be when the trouble started. I could no longer access my remote access site
for my job. That was the first indication. I was also no longer able to
download the software needed to access this site. I really didn't see any
other problems other than that.

Then, about 4 months ago, I sent an ecard. When I did that, I guess part of
the agreement (which of course I didn't bother reading) was downloading and
installing incredimail software. My computer was almost impossible to use
after that. I uninstalled the software, but it's still there. It keeps
asking me to reinstall.

I think that's probably the biggest part of my problem, but of course, I'm
no expert so I can't be sure.

Gerry, in response to your request, I think this is the info you wanted. I
posted my application and system errors, my defrag report.

That's BS. A registry problem either shows up when it's created or it
doesn't about 99.99% of the time. It either did or it didn't.

Faulting application tfswctrl.exe - tfswctrl.exe is an essential process
for HP's packet writing software which burns data to CD's using
Microsoft Windows explorer. Source:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/tfswctrl/
-do not download any software from uniblue.

The normal way to try to remedy the problem would be to uninstall and
reinstall through Add / Remove Programs HP's packet writing software.

Event Source: .NET Runtime -This error could well be caused by the
failed instalation of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

When you have problems with downloads from Microsoft you need to get
the Error code.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column.

The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout
period.

This probably refers to a DVD or CD drive, although a hard drive is not
impossible. What drives do you have? It could be resolved by
reinstalling HP's packet writing software. There are some other
possibilities in the link, which follows:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=9&eventno=2060&source=atapi&phase=1

This problem could give you grief if you try to reinstall Windows XP if
it is a hardware problem as instanced by Wgalway in the link.

Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from
the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address
000CF18D1A56.

This is the type of error that can resolve itself by restarting your
computer. You might be best served by resolving the other problems first
if this error keeps repeating.

Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address 71.224.8.206 on the
Network Card with network address 000CF18D1A56

This is the type of error that can resolve itself by restarting your
computer. You might be best served by resolving the other problems first
if this error keeps repeating.

The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error: The
system cannot find the file specified.

This error relates to a Creative Labs sound card. Does it work? Have you
made changes. Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager?
Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error
code?

It is not worth spending on Event ID:29. It has no real impact on
anything.

In your Disk Defragmenter Report this line has me puzzled? "Volume local
disc (C:) (F:)" It should either refer to Volume C or Volume F. Not
both! Normally the system volume is C. It is unusual to get anything
other than C. However, the details from System Information also refer to
F!

Please check how you drive(s) are partitioned in Disk Management. Start,
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk
Management.

You say you have 2 gb of RAM. The System Information report, however,
says only 1 gb of RAM. Either you are mistaken or your system is not
recognising some of your memory. The system could be pushing RAM to
it's limits and resorting to the pagefile. This could be slowing things.

Hope this helps.

Some comments about the event ids that you mentioned along with links
for each event to www.eventid.net.

Event id 1000 from Application Error - basically indicates that the
tfswctrl.exe CD burning program crashed - a very generic error,
doesn't really tell you why it crashed. Unless it happens all the time
it could be just a fluke (a bug in the program).
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1000&eventno=1475&source=Application Error&phase=1

Event id 0 from .NET Runtime - If a program that is using .NET (the
latests programming environment from Microsoft) crashes, the .NET
Runtime records this message and a cause of the failure (if possible).
In your case it says Application has generated an exception that could
not be handled. in other words, it crashed ungracefully (i.e.
programming error, bug in program).
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=0&eventno=2142&source=.NET Runtime&phase=1

Event id 20 from Windows Update Agent - It just means that the update
from Microsoft failed for the .NET Service Pack 1. Error code
0x80070643 is not that useful, more or less translates to "the update
failed and I don't know why". Do you have enough free space on the C:
drive? Now, the fact that you don't have this update (.NET Service
Pack 1) may be an explanation for the event id 0 from .NET Runtime
(the program crashing may need this service pack).
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=20&eventno=5343&source=Windows Update Agent&phase=1

Event id 9 from atapi - This could be just a scratched CD (the best
case)... does it happen often?
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=9&eventno=2060&source=atapi&phase=1

Event ids 1003 and 1000 from DHCP - Given the IP address mentioned in
the event (71.224.8.206) most probably this indicates that your
comptuter was unable to connect to you Internet provider (to obtain an
IP address). It also indicates that your PC is connected directly to
the Internet and these days that's not advisable, especially if your'e
"not exactly a whiz at this type of thing". Investing in a small
router is well worth it. Again, if this is just one occurence it could
mean just a temporary problem with your Internet provider or simply
the IP address that you had before cannot be reassigned to you and you
will get a different one (and that's fine as everything is
automatically done).
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1003&eventno=1478&source=DHCP&phase=1
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1000&eventno=1921&source=Dhcp&phase=1

Event id 7000 from Service Control Manager - This event indicates that
the required software for a certain hardware device was not started.
The driver specified is PfModNT and that is used by some MP3 players.
Chances are that the installation of the MP3 player that you mentioned
failing did not have the chance to put all the required files and
settings in place (so this message is a consequence of that failure).
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=7000&eventno=108&source=Service Control Manager&phase=1

Event id 29 W32Time - Indicates the fact that the computer was unable
to synchronize the clock with an Internet time server. If you had
Internet connectivity problems than that explains it.
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=29&eventno=1524&source=W32Time&phase=1

Overall, these events don't bring too much additional information
about what's wrong with your system. Some suggestions:
- Make sure that you have enough free hard disk space on C: drive, at
least 2-3 GB (many problems can happen if you are running out of disk
space)
- Usey Add/Remove Programs to uninstall any software that you know for
sure you dont' need
- Apply all the service packs and hotfixed recommended by Microsoft
(use Windows Update)
- Do an antivirus check on the entire computer (use a free online scan
like House Call from Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)
- Run a chkdsk against the C: drive (from a command line run: CHKDSK
C:/F). BEFORE that, backup all the data you believe is important to
another disk or on a CD/DVD

If that doesn't help, you may indeed need to reinstall (and for that
obtain the required CDs from Dell as suggested).

Regards,

Adrian

Susan

Thank you again everyone!

Gerry - My CD burner seems to work fine. If there's a problem with it, I
guess it hasn't affected it's performance. At least to my knowlege. Which
isn't very much I have to admit :)

I uninstalled every program I don't use or really need about a month ago and
defraged after that. Didn't help much that time. It has helped in the past,
but not in this instance.

Now in response to your other questions, I've tried to copy and pasted the
info you asked for, but I'm not able to paste an image.

****This error relates to a Creative Labs sound card. Does it work? Have you
made changes. Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager?
Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error
code?****

In my device manager it states my processor is 2gb? The last info I pasted
about my processor was a copy and past from my system information so maybe
your right about the problem?

The only yellow question mark I saw in device manager was on the help button
at the top of the page? I opened the entire console tree and didn't see
anything else.

****Please check how you drive(s) are partitioned in Disk Management. Start,
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk
Management.****

This is the info from Disk Management. I do think my drives are
partitioned. I vaguely remember something about that. And, as you'll see
below, my disk management states that too.

Volume: Local disc (C:) (F):
Layout: Partition
Type: Basic
File System: NTFS
Status: Healthy (System)
Capacity: 74.5 GB
Free Space: 57.42 GB
%Free: 77%
Fault Tolerance: No
Overhead: 0%

Gerry, thank you so much for your patience and all of the time you are
spending trying to help me. Do you think it might be easier for me to just
reinstall windows since I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing? Or should
I give in and pay for someone to do this for me?

smlunatick - I don't know anywhere near as much as you guys do about this
stuff. I couldn't even begin to touch your knowledge, but my problems did
seem to start just a month or two after downloading and using Reg Cure on a
weekly basis. So, you may very well be right. My computer was slow, but had
no problems at all. Then I accidentally installed the incredimail and that
seemed to be the icing on the cake.

Thanks again all and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
