J JunkMonkey Sep 20, 2004 #2 Izarc is free and works very well, http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/izarc.htm I consider it an excellent alternative to Winzip. I don't now how small is small, but IZArc loads VERY quickly and is ready for use in no time at all.

I use ICEows: http://www.iceows.com/ So far (at least on my system) it's the only freeware file archiver that works reliably and handles all the formats you mention.

UltimateZip 2.7.1 can extract from tar files. It also extracts rar, zip, cab, et al files. 7zip has already been mentioned in a previous post but 7zip is also a good prog from extracting tar.
