Need to extend disk

Guest

Hi all,
Here is my scenario:
I have a Dell Power Edge 2450 server with 2 - 9GB scsi drives setup to
mirror (raid 1). They are partitioned as follows:
Virtual disk 0 = 4GB. 39MB FAT being the Dell utility partion, the rest
being the "C" drive (system) in NTFS.
Virtual disk 1 = 4.47GB. All of which is completely "Unallocated Space".

Can I extend the "C" partiition of Volume 0 use the Unallocated Space in
Volume 1? If so, what is the best way to accomplish this without losing the
system and data that is located on the "C" partition? Will I retain the
mirror?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I have done this two was with success.
1) Creat an image of the disk, then fdisk to resize and push the image back
on the server. Use this if it's a hardware raid.
2) Partition Manager software. It's good and inexpensive.

Good luck

Extending the system volume must be done on the same virtual disk, and your
system seems to have the virtual disk that contains the system partition
filled up.

What you can do, is to create a partition on virtual disk 1, and mount it
as a folder on your system partition, as this MS Knowledge Base article
describes:

Actually there's 792MB free on Virual Disk 0.

I was hoping there was a way of deleting the Virtual Drive 1, and using the
space to extend Virtual Drive 0. I thought Diskpart might be able to do it,
but I've been researching it and I'm just not sure if it will do the trick.

Is there any other way to accomplish this task without the use on Partition
Magic?

Thanx,

I did presume, yesterday, that mirroring was done in hardware, and that you
had created two virtual disks. If this is the case, you might check the
documentation for Array Manager, or ask Dell, if it is possible to delete
one virtual disk, and add the free space to the other.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smarrman

You will need free contiguous space on the same virtual disk, after C:, in
order to extend it, and it needs to be basic, not dynamic.

You might be able to use diskpart.exe from "safe mode with command prompt"
to extend your system partition.

This is normally not recommended on the system partition, but usually works
anyway. Also see this MS Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325590

Be sure to back up, several times, before continuing, as this method isn't
fail safe.

Another option is to perform an upgrade installation, as this article
describes:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289876

Volume Manager from Powerquest might also be an option. Partition Magic
will not help at all, it won't even run on a server installation, and
cannot help with your array configuration.

Best regards
