What other providers offer HTTP access? It's supported only by
Microsoft - Hotmail, MSN, Exchange 2000/2003. Few free email account
services offer POP3 access... only web access, which is not the same
as HTTP.
That was my point, that the ONLY way to get access from an e-mail client
using WebDAV/HTTP to Hotmail is by having to use a Microsoft e-mail
client. Not everyone is enthralled with Outlook or Outlook Express and
would prefer to use a different e-mail client. But no one but Microsoft
is supporting Microsoft's WebDAV scheme.
Did I say *free* webmail providers that include POP3 access? When you
PAY other webmail providers for their premium or "plus" service, you get
POP3 access as part of the deal, and for the same price that Hotmail
charges but which does NOT provide any POP3 access for PAID accounts.
Doesn't take much to find an example. If you *pay* Yahoo for their
premium service at $19.99 per year you also get POP3 access. That means
you can access your Yahoo account using ANY e-mail client, not just
Microsoft's progeny. With Hotmail's Plus service at $19.95 per year,
you still only get WebDAV/HTTP access and are you stuck using
Microsoft's e-mail clients. If you don't want flexibility, portability,
and compatibility then, sure, go pay for Hotmail and use only Outlook
[Express] to access it.
Sure the freebie Hotmail accounts still required you use Outlook
[Express] - but they aren't free anymore and Microsoft doesn't give you
POP3 access AS OTHER WEBMAIL PROVIDERS DO when you *pay* for their
premium service plan. Comparing the two biggy webmail providers and
what you get when you PAY for their premium service:
Mailbox quota:
Hotmail = 2GB
Yahoo = 2GB
Maximum Message Size:
Hotmail = 20MB
Yahoo = 20MB
E-mail aliases:
Hotmail = no
Yahoo = YES (aka AddressGuard)
POP3 access:
Hotmail = no
Yahoo = YES
Accessible using webmail interface:
Hotmail = yes
Yahoo = yes
Accessible using Microsoft e-mail clients (Outlook, Outlook Express):
Hotmail = yes
Yahoo = yes
Accessible using *non-Microsoft* e-mail clients:
Hotmail = no
Yahoo = YES
Mail forwarding:
Hotmail = no
Yahoo = YES
Auto-responders:
Hotmail = none
Yahoo = 2 (one generic, another for those on a domain list)
Synchronization of *webmail* address book:
Hotmail = no
Yahoo = YES (via Intellisync)
Retrieve e-mail from POP3 accounts from other providers:
Hotmail = no (discontinued a couple years ago)
Yahoo = YES (already included in freebie account)
Virus cleaning of attachments:
Hotmail = yes (inbound only and only when using the webmail
interface)
Yahoo = yes (inbound and outbound messages, webmail or POP3)
User-configurable retention time for bulk/spam messages:
Hotmail = no (5 days)
Yahoo = yes (immediately or 1, 2, or 4 weeks)
User-defined filters:
Hotmail = yes (but don't know how many)
Yahoo = 50
Personal web page space:
Hotmail = not available
Yahoo = 15MB (already included in freebie account)
Briefcase (online file storage):
Hotmail = not available
Yahoo = 30MB (already included in freebie account)
Online photo storage:
Hotmail = not available
Yahoo = UNLIMITED (already included in freebie account)
If you are going to spend $20/year for e-mail service which includes a
webmail interface and access using a local e-mail client, there are
better choices than Hotmail!
