I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all available updates.
I am getting the following error increasingly frequently.
Apart from going back to Win98 to run these programs is there a solution?.
I am not running NT although this is reported so oftem I'm contemplating
dumping XP and going back to 98 or 2000
Error :-
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications, Choose 'close' to terminate the
application.

You do not say what programs are giving this error!
Are you trying to run MS DOS programs? If so have you opened autoexec.nt to
see how it is configured? If you want to run Windows 98 you should try
running in Compatibility Mode.
You will find a lot of information in your Windows Help on this subject

Moron, you are running NT, if you are using Windows XP.

Win XP = NT5.1

"Apart from going back to Win98 to run these programs is there a

What are "these programs?"

Windows XP is really Windows NT 5.1

Seems to be an epidemic lately....

This can be caused by a trojan.

Get rid of the trojan.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Copy the autoexec.nt file from C:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows\System32.
And set Attributes for autoexec.nt to Read-only.

Read-only
[[Specifies whether this file is read-only, which means that it cannot be
changed or accidentally deleted.]]

1. Right click the file.
2. Properties.
3. Select: Read-only.
4. Click: Apply.
5. Click: OK.

This can be a couple of things:

1. The combination of the Avast anti-virus program and XP SP2:

Note that you *are* running NT. Windows XP is just the marketing
name for what, under the hood, is actually Windows NT 5.1.
