Need scanning advice tips

Hi there, I am trying to scan some old pictures so that I can create a
movie with pictures and music. I have the software to do this,
however, I have not been too knowledgable about how to get a good
scan. I have an AcerScan Prisa and have no clue if it is a decent
scanner compared to the rest. My hubby claims all scanners are the
same. Anyway, I want to know what is the best settings/resolution to
scan old pictures (many black and white) so that they will look good
on a TV screen. Also, what is the best format to save in? .jpg? .bmp?
..tiff? etc? The end result will be burning to a DVD.

Thank you for any tips on this.

I wholeheartedly agree that scantips.com (no affiliation, just a fan) is
great, and encourage you to buy the print edition, which is even better, if
you find it helpful.
