Need recovery from Virtumonde

Virtumonde ate up all in my laptop. Am desperate for a repair. Broke my
wrist JUL2007 and had to stop. Now trying again.
Am running Pav. HP zx5000 laptop. OEM xp home. Blv I upgraded it to Xp Pro.

My recovery disks don't work. When I turn it on: "NTLDR is Missing". I was
able to get to System setup and BIOS today. Nothing helps.

Don't have floppy drive. Need a fix download for a CD.

Can anybody?????

Thanks..

Please explain what happens when you attempt to use the recovery cd's?
most of the time, you have to set the Bios to boot to the CD drive, then
insert the first recovery cd and boot your pc.

Was able to chng the BIOS to boot from CD drive, but it makes no difference
using my disks. Still get same msg.

Tnx for caring.

Thanks, Engel!

Those URLs look great, but alas.... too late for me.

Virtumonde destoyed my laptop.

I need to bring it back to life before I can get rid of the evil guys.

Hi cd,

This will probably not be your solution but it is easy and can't hurt to try.

Microsoft has free help from Product support services for issues of Viruses
or spyware, or issues relating to security patches.

In the U.S. or Canada call 1-866-pcsafety.

Elsewhere call the local number for paid support and ask for the free help
as outlined above--the call may not be toll-free, but there's no charge for
the help.

This help extends to spyware removal as well.

Stick to this one issue so that the support 'person' does not get
confused and attempt to charge for support.

Maybe someone else can conjure up something else to try.

It cannot hurt to try. ;-)

Good luck

Tnx, Engel......

Will give it a try.

Last year, an MVP gave me a URL for making a CD recovery disk, but it no
longer takes me anywhere.

if these are correct RECOVERY cd's, you wouldn't be getting this kind of
error, how were they made, if something home made, I suggest they are not
done properly and you need to get a proper install cd and perform a repair
install, by booting to the install cd.

by stating you are still getting the same error, you either are not booting
to the recovery cd or they are not properly made. a proper recovery cd is
usually provided by the pc manufactor who installed the Operating system.

can you confirm the pc is attempting to boot to the cd does it actually spin
up?
does it say booting to the cd?

Please list the steps you took to change the boot order, ie
I entered the Bios changed the boot order, saved it to the cmos and
rebooted, it attempted to boot to the cd, confimed by the message displayed
on the screen said booting to the cd, and the cd light was flickering, drive
did spin up.

Something along those lines.

You said that if these were the correct recovery disks, there wouldn't be a
NTLDR is Missing error. I had the same error and I was using the windows XP
setup, not a recovery disk. Virtumonde was infecting a nearly new 250 gig
hard drive. I switched drives ( one that was NOT infected by this garbage)
and the disk loaded fine, but now the 250 gig hard drive has suddenly become
170 gig hard drive and will not boot.

I now have the same garbage on this drive and I'm afraid it will destroy
another one. I don't know where I got it from, but the only places I have
been since reloading is Mircosoft and MSNBC.

It's is near enough impossible to remove Virtumonde. I tried for many hours
without succeeding. I finally gave up and had to buy a new 250 gig hard
drive and install a fresh version of XP.
I made my infected drive a slave to the new one and transferred my docs etc
from old to new.
When I installed the new drive, I seem to remember I had to select whether
to allow the drive to show full size or restrict it to a smaller gigabyte
setting. Sorry I can't be any more help.
I have now formatted old drive and use it for storing my music files.
To who ever wrote Virtumonde, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest his
armpits.

Rocky and Jan.....

So sorry that Virtumonde killed your computers, too.

Thanks to this forum, I was able to make a disk w/a few files that allowed
me to make a little headway and see a tiny bit of life coming back into mine.

First error msg: Missing Ops Sys.... then I've had Missing NLTDR, Missing
EULA...

Orig. disks that came w/computer are good, but wouldn't work until
yesterday. I've tried many things up to this point.

Now, I am able to use orig. Ops Sys CD and it begins to install xp Home SP1
(or SP1a). About in the middle of install, I am now getting the msg: "The
file asms is missing from win. xp Home SP1". Had to quit install. Next try
msg: "need EULA".

So now, I'm stalled, but getting closer. Have one more downloaded disk to
try to get these missng files. If it doesn't work, I'll be back tomorrow.

Thanks to all of you have helped me and responded to me in any way.

I appreciate you!

P.S. Rock, are you a musician?
