dave c.

anyone reading this who has professional experience in
recovering hard drive problems by remote connection,
please respond.

upon turning on my (almost new) Compaq EVo N610c, it gives
me this: "Nonsystem disk or disk error"
even with nothing in CD drive or floppy drive.

I do not want to reformat.

If you have nothing in the floppy or CD ROM drive and you get the error
message you listed then it means your hard drive cannot be found and,
therefore, the system can't boot.

The thing to do is to boot from the floppy and see if you can determine if
the hard drive is really still there and can anything be read on it.
(Assuming you know how to do things from the DOS command prompt.)

dave,

Go to BIOS setup and check if you can see the drive there (to begin with).
Also, since the box is new, why don't you just take it back?

Good Luck!

If it doesn't boot, no one is going to be able to access the computer
remotely.

As far as file recovery, it depends on whether the problem is hardware or
software. If it's a problem with the computer itself, there's nothing wrong
with the hard drive, and you just need to put the drive in a working
computer and copy your files over. If the hardware problem is with the drive
itself, it's possible to access the data, but it probably requires taking
the drive apart in a clean room.

If it's a software glitch on the hard drive, you'd still need a functioning
computer to put the drive into, so that the software could run, and then
you'd copy the data off.

You need to find someone local who can do this for you.

Thank you! I unscrewed the cover and removed the hard
drive, then put it back in. did not help.

thank you! when i strike F10 on bootup, i can see the c:
drive in BIOS. i can also get it to boot on my Compaq
Recovery Disk, but it wants to reformat.
I was not clear when i said it was nearly new. i bought it
several months ago on ebay, from a Compaq employee who'd
never opened the box. HP support people (in india) are
well meaning but not of too much help.
thanks, again
