Drive letters

For some reason my removable media drive letters have all
changed, ie a has become b, f has become g, g has become
h ... etc. In addition I now have 3 cd drives recongnised
when there are only 2.

does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a compaq evo n610c laptop rnning w2k. The drives
that have changed are all multibay devices - so the floppy
drive, CD etc, this means they are connected by USB.

Jump to My Computer, right click, Manage and then to Disk Management. There
you should find all your physically drives. Here you can also change the
drive letters.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried this but I still have
a CD drive that I cannot access and that does not show up
under disc management. Is there a way I can 'remove' this
drive that isn't actually present?

Can you find this device in the Devicemanager?

How to find the Devicemanager:
Start, Run , devmgmt.msc

One way that works for me is simply to remove all items
in the CDROM section of device manager. Then reboot
and let windows reinstall them. Worked great just the
other day for me.

Thanks for the responses. I have 2 cds in the device
manager, one is scsi one is on ide. I have two physical cd
drives so I assume that the two showing are the physical
drives. I tried removing all the cds the other day, then
rebooted as you describe and still had the mystery drive
with an icon, a drive letter but not atually there.

It showed up when I was mapping a network drive and when I
switched the usb 2 support back on, having disabled it 12
to 18 months ago because w2k wasn't up to usb 2 (or so
compaq told me). I assumed it was up to usb2 now, perhaps
it isn't and this is the problem.

Help to get rid of this mystery drive gratefully
appreciated.
