Need MVP Help - OL 2007 Contact "Email Addresses Not Valid"

Office 2007 Ultimate with Outlook 2007 SP1

Problem: How to fix e-mail addresses in Contacts with invalid display names.
Error Message: “The name or distribution list has been deleted and is no
longer a valid address book entry. The item could not be found.â€
Secondary Problem: This bad address/display name causes OL 2007 to enter
into an endless send/receive loop and the message becomes stuck in the
Outbox.

Subject: Outlook 2007 and Vista (Send/Receive Loop)

Here’s hoping that some MVP's can help me resolve this issue. I have a new
Dell XPS M1330 running Vista HP SP1 and Office 2007 Ultimate. I have three
POP accounts with EarthLink, Gmail, and Cox. I was previously using Office
2003 and have a dedicated .PST file for my contacts which I sync to my
BlackBerry.

The problem started when I created a new e-mail message and cut and paste
the e-mail address from Outlook Contacts. The message then became stuck in
my Outbox and send/receive went into a wicked endless loop and spiked CPU at
100%. After searching a few forums, I started TSing by disabling the iTunes
and Cyberlink COM add-ins which other users had reported as slowing Outlook
down.

When this didn’t work, I deleted my Gmail POP account and deleted the
culprit e-mail from my Outbox. That resolved the send/receive issue.
Now, when I right-click on a sampling of e-mail addresses in different
Contacts, I get the “no longer valid†error message. One post I read
suggested using a tool from Chapura to fix this issue.

Does anyone know what causes this issue and the best way to approach a
repair/fix (other than manually re-typing those e-mail address in each
Contact)?

Thanks,
Jack

p.s. – Special thanks to others for posting on this and I hope this full
description helps others solve these related and frustrating issues!

1. you coulda used File, work offline then deleted the stuck message.
2. if you click to, do you see the addresses in the address book?
3. did you upgrade from 2003? Are you syncing with the BB? Are the invalid
addresses in the BB pst or the current pst?

Diane - Thanks for the quick reply.
1. you coulda used File, work offline then deleted the stuck message.
Good suggestion. I killed the outgoing message and the Send/Recieve loop
ceased.
2. if you click to, do you see the addresses in the address book?
Negative. See to next question below.
3. did you upgrade from 2003? Are you syncing with the BB? Are the invalid
addresses in the BB pst or the current pst?
- Yes, the .PST files were used with OL 2003 and are the "Personal Folders
File" format.
- This is a brand new machine and will be synced with a brand new BB Curve
after I resolve this issue - I have not loaded the BB Desktop software yet
nor performed any type of sync.
- Mail is being delivered to the default "Outlook.pst" created with OL 2007.
I have opened the OL 2003 .PST where my Contacts folder resides and this is
where I cut and paste the address from to insert in a new mail message.
- The primary reason that I maintain a separate .PST folder for my contacts
is that it's easier to back-up, stays smaller, and limits the chance of
corruption that can occur in a larger .PST file.

Thoughts, suggestions, and next steps?

I'm not sure if the problem is with the addresses - they should work if they
are in the pst and you just moved them. If you select the contacts and use
Edit, copy to folder to copy them to the main contacts folder, do they work?

Our standard fix for missing contacts is:
---------------------
If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

If you use Outlook 2007, you need to make a new profile if the box is grayed
out.
--------------

FWIW, I sync with my BB by category. It beats using multiple contact
folders. Corruption is rare, but you should make regular backups.
