Can anyone recommend a good free IRC client that is easy to use and will
preferably automatically connect to the server and channel upon running it?

I've had pretty good luck with Hydrairc in the past,
http://hydrairc.sf.net , not positive that it does the autoconnect on
restarting but it is actively developed, you could probably make a
request, afterall how hard could it be right :)

Just a correction: it looks like HydraIRC no longer resides at the
URL above. http://www.hydrairc.com/ seems to be the home for HydraIRC
now.

Bad link. Found it at http://www.hydrairc.com/

Minimum System Requirements:
HydraIRC has been designed for use on Windows XP but also runs on
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 & Windows 2003. (Windows 95 and
Windows NT are not supported).
There is no real minimum specification, as HydraIRC consumes very
little ram, requires almost no CPU time and needs hardly any disk
space!
HydraIRC runs best in 16 or 32bit display modes.

I prefer to use the much safer way of doing IRC.
How much safer is it? Well... Should you ever get any of those
nasty worms or bugs that love to wreck havac with IRC programs and
script files using this nice beauty for IRC and the darn worms and
bugs will have no idea in the universe that you have any IRC software
running on your pc. JPILOT.EXE = JAVA based IRC program
which uses INI files and no script files. Downloads and runs
as a browser plugin. It also is a stand-alone thing as well.
And of course... it is 100% FREEWARE.
