I've tried both of these in the past and they worked well regardless of the
product. Recently I purchased a new computer that came with XP Home. I have
the professional upgrade and tried to install. To my surprise the I was not
able to upgrade because the Home version had sp2 installed. Is there anyway
to use the upgrade sp1 version? Or am I dead in the water and need to
purchase the sp2 upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

Yes their is a way. It's called a slipstream CD, which is basically your XP
SP1 CD slipstreamed to integrate SP2. The result is an .ISO file that you
use to create the final slipstreamed version of Windows XP install CD that
includes SP2.
Start out by downloading the SP2 update file to your hard drive from
Microsoft.

To create this CD I use AutoStreamer, it easy to use and for the most part
self explanatory
