Need Help with System Restore Function

I was installing Norton Antivirus 2006 last night and somehow have done
something to my OS.

I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002.

I'm not quite sure what I did. As Norton was installing, via disk, a
message came up asking me about re-configuring something or other in order to
make the install work. I assumed that it was okay to click yes and honestly
didn't even pay that much attention to it because it seemed normal.

The next thing I know, I am getting an error message re: Norton installation
not being successful. There is a link. Since I have dial up I went to go
sign in to MSN and would not let me. It said the modem was busy. I decide
to take the Norton disk out and shut down my computer and then try again.

When I restart, all of my desktop icons are funny looking and I can't get
anything to do anything. I can't click on anything and get it to pull up and
I can't go into start and use any of the programs either. Also, I still
can't get online and am getting the same modem busy message when I try to do
so.

I try to do a system restore, but again, can't get anything to pull up when
I click on any icon or use the start up menu. I can't even get anything in
help to come up and am doing this right now from work!

I thought that maybe I had somehow un-installed or deleted some portion of
Windows that I need to run everything while installing Norton, so I tried to
put in the Windows XP disk that i have but even that pulled up something
funny. It didn't just start to run itself, I guess it pulled it up as a
piece of software in the CD rom or something, but I couldn't get it to do
anything helpful either!

I am at an utter loss and am not computer savvy at all. One of my coworkers
suggested that I post here for help.

Any ideas very much welcome!

Thanks

Hi,

To workaround, you can repair window. just insert windows cd and select
to install windows. when it detects the installed windows, choose to
repair it. be patient until the repair process finishes.

To solve the problem:
The symptoms here is most likely a modification made by a virus. some
viruses associate .exe and .dll files with their own code. Norton
Antivirus detects and removes this worms but it does not correct the
association. to correct the problem:
1 - find and copy regedit.exe to reg.com
2 - execute reg.com and browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

set following values: defualt: exefile , content type:
application/x-msdownload
3- set the following value under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler
defualt: "%1" %*
4- Restart your windows and re-execute antivirus setup
5- Full scan it

Hope it helps
