Help Please driving Me Mad.....

G

Gentleon

I am not very technically minded but my PC is driving me to despair. it all
started when my wife loaded a dodgy web site that tried to download Win PC
Defender? We could not get rid of this but I have now managed to uninstall it.

Every time we start the machine up it gets as far as the blue welcome screen
and the PC freezes. The second time I start it up it will let me start it but
it comes up saying that it wants to install a fax machine and that windows
disc not found?

I thought I would be clever and re install Windows from the disc, it all
went OK until it tried to restart the machine , it tried to go into XP set up
from the boot menu but it hangs?

The whole thing seems to be very unstable, I tried to download the one care
programme but that says it can't run because Norton is running, I can't
uninstall Norton because it says a web browser is running (even if there
isn't)...

Someone give me a clue as to what I can do please!

It sounds like you are in way over your technical skills. About time to bite the shilling and hire
a professional technician.

I would have though tha Windows would have been clever enough to run kind of
clean up or diagnostic tool to ascertain what is wrong?

Is it likely that the machine is troubled by a virus? should I re format the
whole thing and start from scratch?

all, I have not got much money to spend with computer wizards! Is there any
software I could purchase that may fix the problem. Someone at work suggested
that Norton 360 may work which looks to be about £50? It was working fine
till this blessed win defender tried to install...... Shouldn't it be illegal
to force programs onto someones PC???

Windows can't cover for a dumb operator.

Mike - very helpful !

How is an operator dumb when the machine has been hacked by a dodgy web
site. I have always found that if you can't say anything useful not to
bother....

A "smart" operator practices safe hex... and always wears protection,
just in case.

Gentleon, it appears you are replying to Bill Sharpe, but you are making
it difficult to follow the thread by deleting what he said!

In another post, you mentioned you have infected yourself with WinPC
Defender. MBAM should be able to remove it. See this page for more info:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-winpc-defender

As you can see, this may be a bit involved.

in any case, I think
your skills will prove
useful after you
uninstall norton.

then you can run
one care and defender.

Can you do a HIJACKTHIS at Belarc and it will diagnose for you what is
wrong. Or can you set your computer to go back to a date when it wasn't
acting up?

You needn't. I expect anything from your obnoxious rude personality. Nothing
surprises me.
Who are you trying to impress? You don't impress me.

How many times do I have to tell you (are you senile?) that I do it
because I freaking LIKE to do it?

Imagine what I might be like face-to-face if I didn't have this
outlet???

Shouldn't you be watching Judge Alex right now?

No, there isn't such software.

If you want to do it right, and can spend a little, get a new hard disk.
Where I am, a 250 gig hard disk is just over CDN$50.

Remove the old drive, install the new one, install clean from your XP CD.

After XP is installed and updated, and your antivirus is updated, then you
can power down, attach the old drive as a slave, and copy your data back
over. You might want to scan the drive frst.

Hardly. You say you LIKE to insult people. If that isn't mental instability,
obnoxious rude behavior, what do you call it?
