Need help with strange problem.

Brian Beckers

Having a strange problem with a computer on our network running Windows XP
Professional. This PC is similar to others on the network.

During user input, whether it is enter numbers into QuickBooks, typing a
Memo in Word, or even typing a URL into IE's address bar, the computer will
sometimes appear to "freeze" for 1-3 seconds, and then whatever the last key
that was pressed will appear multiple times. E.g. type 'w' and get
'wwwwwwwwwwwwww'.

This happens intermittently, it doesn't matter what application is being
used, and can happen frequently during a day or not at all during a day.
Lately, it has been numerous times almost every day.

The user thought it was a keyboard problem and replaced the keyboard with no
improvement.

The system is running Windows XP SP3, and I have personally verified that
all applicable service patches have been applied through Microsoft Update.

Can anyone please give me some ideas on what could be causing this problem
and how it can be corrected?

Thank you in advance,
Brian

If it is a USB keyboard, try plugging it into a different USB port. If
its a PS/2 connection, I have nothing to suggest. It's possible the port
is the problem rather than software or the keyboard itself.

Unfortunately, neither windows nor most devices for PC's ship with
useful diagnostics.
