Need Help with Password for Windows

Hello! I kept receiving a pop-up message on my computer everytime I started
it up saying "your password is going to expire in (so many) days". I kept
hitting cancel or "notify me in 14 days" and when I went to start my computer
last night, a new-pop up window came up asking for the old password and to
come up with a new password. Problem is I don't know what the password is
and neither does my husband (he swears he never put a password on Windows in
the first place) and now we can't open the computer and therefore can't get
to our files or print anything we need to print! I also can't hotsync my
Palm Pilot now.
I need HELP!!!! How can I bypass that screen so my Windows will open when I
don't know what the password is???

It seems you kept sweeping the password problem under the
carpet until it became a real issue. A much better way would be
to log on as administrator immediately and resolve the issue once
and for all.

There are several ways to deal with this issue. On many WinXP
Home machines you can boot in Safe Mode, then log on as
administrator with a blank password. This will allow you to set
(and record!) the password for your normal logon account.

Another way is to boot the machine with a boot diskette from
here, then reset the adminstrator's password to a blank.

I had this problem on a friends computer. He had the same message keep
coming up but he said he never had a password setup on his PC.

We got around it by leaving the password boxes empty and just clicking to
change password and it worked. He still gets the same message as you do
every so often but he does the same again and continues to use his PC.

This happened after he installed an update but he does not know which one.

Hope this helps.

Paul.

Try the old password as blank.
If it doesn't work, Log-in to built in Administrator account by pressing
[Ctrl>Alt>Delete] twice then entering "Administrator" as user name (XP Pro,
for XP Home Boot in Safe mode).

Click Start > Run > Type "lusrmgr.msc" (Without quotes) > Double click Users
Double click your Account name > Tick "Password never expires"

Thank-You, Paul!!!!!! Your suggestion totally worked! And thanks for not
giving me a lecture! :) Neither my husband nor I are just not very
computer savvy, but this doesn't make me stupid...I have a Master's degree,
just not in anything having to do with computers! You completely saved
me!...Thanks again, Paul!

I don't know if this will affect if "Password never expires" is checked but
increase the value of "Maximum password age" in:
gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration >Windows Settings >Security Settings
Account Policies >Password Policy

Or in :
secpol.msc > Account Policies >Password Policy
