I have just bought a new comp. HP M7640n with AMD 64

with 320 gig HD 2 gig Ram. ECT. This is a media Center

computer with all the bells & Whistles,

The Problem I have is I cannot get my 300 gig. Maxtor

to work on this computer as a slave drive, and HP is no help

I do know my way around computer having built many in days

past but there has to be something I am overlooking.

I have right now a 200gig Maxtor as a slave driver and works fine,

but cannot get the 300 to work. The jumper is set to slave

but the computer just does not recognize the 300 gig it. I do go to

the BIOS and there may be the problem but not sure.

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tigertony

There have been many posts on this and other ng's regarding Maxtor hd's not
'playing'
Is the larger slave detected in the bios?
Is it a sata drive, sata1 or sata2?
When you say pc is not recognising it, what do you mean?
Is the drive detected/reported in Disk Management?

tony:
The new HDD is partitioned/formatted, yes? I assume you've accessed Disk
Management. Any clue there?

Assuming it's not a partitioning/formatting issue, what do you mean when you
say "I do go to the BIOS and there may be the problem but not sure."? What
gives you an idea there may be a problem with the BIOS detecting the HDD?

And you're sure you've properly connected/configured the disk, right?

Have you tried connecting it on another IDE channel?

Any possibility you may be dealing with a defective disk? Have you checked
it out with Maxtor's diagnostic?
