Need Help Setting Up Printer Sharing on Network

T

Texan

I need to setup a printer sharing on my wife's Peer to Peer ( OS is Win
2000 Pro on two machines connected by a switch) office network. From
what I've read it seems I need to use (or install) Win 2000 Server and a
second NIC. The NIC is no problem but I am a little confused about the
difference between "Win 2000" and "Win 2000 Server". Are these all the
same OS or is Win 2000 Server a separate application I need to buy and
install?

Any suggestion on how to share a printer will be appreciated.

Thanks Donald, that sounds easy enough. I'll give it a try. Still I am
confused about Win 2000 Pro and Win 2000 Server . Are they the same OS
application or are they two different OS applications. I think I will
need 2000 Server when they get DSL installed and I will have to connect a
DSL modem. Any pointers on Win 2000 Pro and Win 2000 Server?

Hi! Texan,
You do not need any 'Windows 2000 Server'
For you, Windows 2000 Professional can work.
I would forget Windows 2000 Sever for your case.

( You can use up to ten PCs by Windows 2000 Pro(or XP pro)
by 'Peer to Peer or Workgroup' Network.)
( Windows 2000/2003 server is really expensive...
just check the price by yourself ...
in case, your network/LAN is so small...
if you are using a lot PC's, then Windows 2000/2003 Server
is much better than Windows 2000/XP Pro with less restrictions
and much more attractive functions etc...)

Remarks: When you say applications,
then what kind or applications do you want?

If you would like to get/need more information
just go to Microsoft web site, then
you can see many articles regarding this issue.

2000 pro will work with DSL also. Are you trying to
share a connection between computers? If so get yourself
a cheap computer, put two NIC's in it and install Linux
[for free] and set up a NAT/Firewall, plug your DSL modem
in it, plug the PC into a switch and plug all the PC's
you want into the switch and that'll do it.

check out www.netfilter.org and dont buy 2000 server
unless you have about 30 PC's you are trying to connect
on a network and in need of shared resources. Otherwise
you can use Linux for DHCP, and any other services you
need.
