Need help Re-installing Win 2K

dwight

I am trying to run a re-install of Win2K on an HP
pavillion laptop.

I don't want to have to delete the current windows
folder, I do not have any rescue/ restore discs.

Can I do a reinstall over the current Win 2K without
having to delete the current winnt directory.

If I delete the current Winnt folder, then the
preinstalled programs won't work and I will have to re-
install all those programs again.

I really do not want to do this!!

Thanks in advance!!!

See MSFT KB articles 292175 and 306952, but first make a full backup of your
system.

Dwight:

First Back up your registry before doing anything. Go to
START->RUN-> Type cmd, Enter, then Type regedit. Export a
copy of the registry file to your desktop or somewhere you
can retrieve it. If the procedure below fails you can
reinstall your Registry.

You can do a repair using your Win 2K CD-Rom. Reboot your
computer go to the Setup Bios. Change your Boot Sequence
to allow your CD-Rom to boot ahead of your Floppy.

Place your Win 2K CD-Rom into your drive tray. Now save
and reboot your system. During the boot process towards
the bottom of your screen you should see a line that says
to "press any key to boot from your CD-Rom". Sorry I
don't remember exactly the script but you should recognize
it easily.

From there basically follow the prompts. Perform the
repair and then reboot. Take notes of what is happening
and which window directories are being repaired.

This should work fine for you.

Good Luck.

I guess I chould hav clarified one thing.

I am a system technician, I work for a PC repair company.

When I boot from the W2K cd and run setup, it never gives
me the option to do a repair install, only the normal
install prompts. It just goes right to the partitioning
info, and never gives me the option to repair, except for
the first screen (repair console) this of course doesn't
do what I want.

Any other ideas??

if sees the winnt folder, but doesn't see it as the OS!!
