Ok, I downloaded a add on for a game I used to play. I tryed deleteing
it through Add or Remove Programs, but it says "Could not open logfile
'C:\Documents and Settings\ST6UNST.LOG'" I have looked but I can't even
seem to find the actual file. I tryed searching through SEARCH but it
didn't give me anything...Even when I seached through Hidden Files but
nothing....and its a big file...But it was never this big. Its 8K MB I
dont know why. It wasn't that big of a file when I downloaded it. Could
it be that a virus has taken over it??!??!?

An effective way to handle this problem is to:
Click run
Type in regedit: Click OK
Click edit---find and type in the name of the file you downloaded.
Back up your registry first.
When you find the file you can delete it.

Hi powerkill

If the .log file is really missing, that would be why the uninstall
isn't working. C:\Documents and Settings is a strange location for a
program to put it in, though; are you sure the path you gave is correct?

Two suggestions: [1] Try searching your disk (including hidden files and
folders) for *.log files. If you can find it, it just means that the
uninstall info in the registry (that tells Add/Remove how to get rid of
the program) is probably pointing to the wrong place, and that can
easily be fixed.

If you can't find it, perhaps it's been deleted by mistake. Try
reinstalling the program and then uninstalling again.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

It's a VB6 program. The uninstall routine is calling
ST6UNST.EXE, which should be looking for the log
file in the program folder. It sounds like the program
was never properly installed in the first place.

Ok, I found the program redownloaded it, know how would I tell
Add/Remove where the directory is...it still says (c:Documents and
settings) after it.

Hi powerkill

You re-downloaded it, but did you actually re-install it? Assuming that
you did, is the uninstall log file now actually present in C:\Documents
and Settings? If it is, try opening it with Notepad, just to verify that
it *is* "openable". I'm not sure, but it sounds from your message as if
you've found the uninstall file, but it's in a different folder?

If the file *is* present, but not where Add/Remove expects it to be in
Docs and Settings, I'd suggest you download a free program called
Add/Remove Pro direct from the author here:
http://superwin.com/freeware.htm
(You can also do the following in the registry, but using Add/Remove Pro
is safer than tinkering about in there :)

When you run the program you'll see a list of your installed software
with an icon beside each one; green for a "good link", where the
uninstall files are found, or an X if there's a broken link. Your rogue
program will likely show as broken. Click on the entry to highlight it,
but *don't* just click the "Remove Entry" button -- this won't uninstall
the program.

Instead click on the "Change Uninstall String" tab, find the part that
refers to the uninstall log and *very carefully* change the path to
point to the correct location. The uninstall string will very likely
include other commands and instructions, so be sure to change only this
path and not delete anything else. Then click Save Changes.

You can see if this has worked by clicking the Refresh List button to
see if the program now gets a green "good link" icon, or click on the
"Finder" tab and follow the instructions there. If all's well, you can
now click on Uninstall Program and hopefully this time you should be
finally rid of it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes :)
