Need Help from anyone that will respond....

I have posted this question twice already but I haven't gotten a response.
Can anyone help please?

Most of the menu items on the Start Menu have an option to "Pin" or "Unpin"
to the Start Menu, but some do not. In the past I have been able to drop
most any menu item on to the Start Menu with out any problem. However, I
have this one that I can't seem to get there. I have done this in the past
on a couple of PC's with this same menu item, but now I can't get it to work.
I can drop it onto the "Quick Launch" bar with no problem but not the Start
Menu. The only thing I can see
different, is the fact that it does not have the "Pin to Start Menu" option
available.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

This seems to have to do with the way the shortcut is created. One way to
correct it is to create the shortcut manually. Do this by right-clicking
the actual ".exe" file in the folder, and selecting "Create Shortcut". Drag
this shortcut onto your start menu and you should find that your normal
options are available.

I appreciate the response but that doesn't fix the problem. I have tried
every way I know to create the shortcut but it still doesn't work. Maybe if
I give more specific details, it might shed more light.

The shortcut I'm trying to drag and drop is Netware Admin which is located
on the sys volume of our Novell network. I have tried creating the shortcut
from the desktop and from explorer. I have even tried putting it in the same
menu group with Excel, Word, etc. I can drop Excel and Word onto the Start
menu with no problem but not Netware Admin. I have done this before, in fact
it is on my PC that I am typing on at this very moment. However, I can't
seem to get it to work on another PC. Once again, the only difference I can
see is the "Pin and Unpin" option.

Thanks again for your effort.

I was only able to replicate this problem with a shortcut that was created
during a Windows Installer based software installation. This shortcut (for
Paint Shop Pro) didn't appear to point directly to the .exe file and would
not allow itself to be pinned. Creating a shortcut that did point directly
to the .exe file corrected the issue.

Based on what David Candy posted, I created a shortcut that pointed to a
network item, which didn't allow pinning. I haven't been able to correct
that one yet, so I'll defer to what he said insofar as not being able to do
that with a network shortcut.

Of course, you say you've already done it, so I guess I'm out of
answers...sorry.

This may be true, however, if you will read below you will see that I have in
the past been able to drop it onto the Start Menu. On the PC I'm trying to
set up, if I change to the Classic Start Menu mode, the Icon appears - but
not in the XP Start Menu mode.

I know this can be done in Windows 2000, because I used to customize all my
users' Start Menus to include shortcuts to applications that run from our
Novell network. I also know that is has worked a couple of times with XP as
I am looking at it on my own PC.

Why did it only work a couple of times???

I suspect networks is for speed reasons. Installer is because the Start can't tell what program. A pinned item is a MFU item with a flag set. They are a list of frequency of execution in the registry but the items shown are really the original items in a list. It monitors Start Menu shortcuts by default but dragging adds to the list of monitored items. Unlike Personalised Menus, MFU monitors processes that are started (PM monitors items that are clicked). Installer starts all Office and other apps so there in not a possinility to monitor the programs that installer starts.

Windows 2000 doesn't have an MFU therefore you didn't. The Windows 2000 start menu is algalamated with the Programs menu to form the All Programs menu.

Makes sense to me...

Personally, I'm a little OCD about start menu items and my desktop, so I've
never tried to do what the OP is trying. I do everything I can to
*minimize* how many shortcuts there are...in my world, the fewer - the
better...;-)

OK....to begin with, I'm not sure what the acronym "MFU" represents. I do
know however, that Windows 2000 has/had and area on the Start Menu that was
customizable for the purpose of "Quick Lauching" frequently used applications
(located directly above Programs, Documents, Settings, Search, etc.).
Regardless of the terminology or what goes on "behind the scenes", it mimicks
the same area of the Windows XP Start Menu.

It seems as though we are "side stepping" the issue here. It has nothing to
do with the Windows technical jargon or the difference in operating systems
or how the registry stores shortcut information. It does, however, have to
do with the fact that I was able to do this on at least 2 other machines but
now I can't make it happen. If there is doubt in your mind or you suspect
that I'm seeing things, I would be glad to send you a jpeg image of my Start
Menu. The question is......how was I able to make it happen before but not
now. This is the question that has got me (and quite obviously you) baffled.

Thanks for your effort anyway.

Doesn't have me baffled. It doesn't work and nor should it. The MFU is the Most Frequently Used part of the Start Panel. It is a list of programs started. You cannot copy anything there cause it doesn't exist. The equivelent feature in W2K is the hidden items in Start. A pinned item is a MFU item set to always show.

Copy it to where it's supposed to go, All Programs. Which is an algamated Start and Programs menu (which are backed by file folders to store the shortcut).

You have still side stepped the issue:
FACT: It DID work and now it doesn't. Case opened - Case closed.
FACT: You have NO explaination and therefore - BAFFLED - Case opened - Case
Closed.

As I said, I would be glad to send you an image file showing you proof that
it DID in fact work at least one time, although I seriously doubt you would
believe since you haven't believed anything else I've said.

D

David Candy

That's because I doubt you can provide proof. A picture of start isn't helpful. From what you said that is the proof you have. But post it anway as a gif. I might be able to tell from the picture what it is you did.

The problem is you lack a conceptual understanding of windows. Don't feel bad, it's hidden from you.

I still say you're missing the point. I have no desire to have a conceptual
understanding of windows and therefore have nothing to feel bad about....I
just want it to do the same thing 2 times in a row. I can send you the image
either as a jpeg or in a Word doc. The image program I have will not allow
me to save it as a gif.
