I have a file that my Norton program keeps alerting on that is a "Trojan". I
have tried to delete it using the Norton program and manually. I get "access
denied". Presumably because the file is in the \WINDOWS directory. Is there
a way that I can start my computer in DOS mode only and be able to delete the
file. It's name is
JASSTE.DLL

Thanks in advance.

If the above doies not work, you can also try to remove it using Dr. Delete:
http://www.docsdownloads.com/Tier1/dr-delete.htm

It may require a restart. Some sypware/viruses re-create themselves when
your computer is re-started, so make sure there are no unknown programs
starting up with the OS (Go to Start > Run > type msconfig, Go to startup tab)

Hey Will,

I thought I might try the panda scan and did with an almost disastrous
result and thought you should know.
I started the scan and had to download their active X installer among other
AX files and scanned my doc's folder without a problem. I then started a
system scan and got a page and needed to disconnect from the internet to use
the phone. I stopped the scan and saw a note that said I could reconnect and
resume the scan, so I did sign off and made my call. I returned to the
computer and tried to close down some open windows and the system was very
slow to respond. I then tried to open the task manager to end programs and
noticed that the CPU was at 100% use. I then checked Intel's active monitor
to see that zone 2-3 were showing 122 degrees and rising and then came the
alarms. I had to try to shutdown a slow and unresponsive computer and was a
second away from hitting the PSU off switch when it responded finally to the
turn off computer, turn off command. All is well now, I have disabled Panda's
AX's and will never use the free Panda scan again. It must have been a
conflict with my NIS program I guess? I recommend using Panda scan with great
care or not at all and would not recommend it for beginners or novice
computer users.

Yes, you could start your computer using MS-DOS using a windows 98
boot disk. However this would be rather pointless as you would not be
able to acces any of the local files asuming you are using NTFS. How
ever you can start the Recovary Console which is not MS-DOS by any
means, but is similare. To start the recovary console you need to put
the xp setup disk in the drive, and when it asks you if you want to
reinstall, select repair (this is not automatied system repair)
