Need help. Cannot install X64 SP1

I have a ThinkPad T61, which is a machine that was originally delivered with
32-bit Vista Ultimate, but that same model came with 64-bit vista as an
option. I am trying to reinstall vista using a retail 64-bit vista ultimate
DVD. The initial install went fine. I then got all the Lenovo drivers
installed. I have no problem devices. I first tried to apply SP1 from a
DVD without installing prerequisites and that failed. I ran windows update,
and I had a lot of trouble getting all the updates installed. Finally, I
installed the updates 5 at a time and manually download and installed any
that failed. When I was done, Vista SP1 finally appeared as an important
updates. Rather than downloading it again, I tried to install the service
pack that I loaded on a DVD from the 720 MB download. I tried to install
that and it failed. I then tried again multiple times with Windows update.
It seems to fail with a different error each time. The last time, the error
code was 80070017.

I have run multiple passes of memory checking and a full set of disk
diagnostics. I have run a PC Doctor full hardware test. Everything checks
out fine. I have 4GB of RAM installed, but I saw a note somewhere where a
guy thought there was a windows update problem with more than 2GB of memory.
So, the last time, I pulled 2GB out, but nothing has worked. I have wasted
a whole day on this and would appreciate an suggestions. I ran a full
backup before I started, so I always have the option to decide that the
64-bit OS just doesn't work.
