My friends computer running xp it has a C drive, d drive which is a backup,
Recovery drive E, and cd rom nd dvd drive, it did have a a drive but it has
dissappeared, not sure if machine has had a virus.
The My document files are empty, all files are saving to the backup drive,
I tried moving them to the c drive to free up space managed to free up half
the drive, it holds abou 15 gb.
you cannot run anything they is no space, and all the program files are
missing, no MS works Word Printer internet etc.
could it be that its running everything from the backup drive, instead of
the c drive.
if any one has any ideas or solutions I would be grateful.

Maggie,

In all sincerity, what country are you posting from. Please, please don't
say US.

Try rephrasing the situation, details and question - it is very hard to
follow.
Here is what I understand:
You have a 15GB C: drive (with WinXP and applications), a D: drive which
is used for backup purposes, and an E: drive, which I assume is the
manufacturer's recovery partition for restoring the PC to a like new
condition.
What don't make sense is - why would you move files from the D: backup
drive to C: if you are getting a message about not enough free space when
running the applications from C: - that would just make matters worse.
Also, the question, "could it be that is running everything from the backup
drive, instead of C: drive" - conflicting info - is D: a true backup drive
or is it where your applications were installed? If this is true, then
moving them (application folders) from D: to C: will not work by simply
copying them and/or moving them, as there are shortcuts pointing to D:, not
to mention the thousands upon thousands of register entries for those
application pointing to D:. Next, if the DVD and CD drives have
disappeared, it sounds as if again, you moved your CD/DVD writing software
improperly, as the atapi drivers they use (they replace the MS ones) or the
software used when the computer is booted is now in the wrong place and
can't be found - either that, or your CD/DVD software was removed
improperly - again moving from one drive to another without
uninstalling/reinstalling will do that. Lastly, if the contents of My
Documents are missing, then someone had to physically "delete" them or
unless you've had My Documents redirected to D: and just moved them to C:
then again plays those registry entries.

Bottom line, in today's windows, certain folders for Windows and
applications just can't be moved from one drive to another or one partition
to another without upsetting the world.
