Having some troubles with an HP Pavilion 762C, Pentium 4...
At this point, I just want to back up my data and restore the system to
its out of the box configuration.
So, I go out and get a deal on a Western Digital external USB hard
drive. It's plug and play, no drivers needed, no disk(s) included.
Windows XP (XP Home) recognizes the new hardware, but cannot complete
the process because it can not find the (generic) Windows HDD Driver.
The external HD boots right up when I plug it into either of 2
different laptops - running XP Pro. So, I am certain that the device
works properly.
Western Digital tech support is no help, because it's "driverless" and
they do not have Windows drivers to send around.
Likewise with HP, they do not have the Windows drivers.
And of course, Microsoft won't coppoerate because my version of Windows
is an OEM version. THey sent me back to HP. Who still cannot help. One
more run at WD, no progress there. And once again, back to HP who
cannot help.
So, what am I asking for here? Anything, some advice as to how to get
this drive to boot up. So that I can back up my data. I have a home
network and took a go at networking my laptop with the USB HD on it,
but the laptop is XP Pro, and the desktop with the data is XP Home and
I couldn't make it happen....
