Need fresh copy of rundll32.exe file

R

Ronald

My PC is infected with the Backdoor.Lastdoor Trojan Horse
virus. Norton indicates that I should delete the file
and reinstall it. They also say delete a value from a
registry key.

I called Dell, who is my support provider asking how to
acquire a clean copy of rundll32.exe. I thought it could
be obtained from an XP CD, but Dell claims I will have to
wipe out my computer completely and reinstall XP all over
again.

Is this really necessary? My computer works fine right
now, at least as far as I can see. The infected file is
still in the quarantine.

Please let me know if there is any way to fix this
problem without having to reinstall XP.

Thanks!

No, it's not necessary, but are you certain that you need THIS file
restored.

Some virii actually use a file by that name because it looks like a windows
file, but it is in another place then where Windows puts it.

Before you do anything, search for this file in C:\Windows\system32...if
it's there, you don't need a fresh copy (Norton killed the duplicate-named
virus file, but not the WINDOWS file)

If it is not there (make sure you can see system and hidden files), type the
following at a command line (assuming d: is your cd-rom drive)

expand d:\i386\rundll32.ex_ C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe
