i want the form fields on my page to appear as long as they actually are. for
example, if i have a name form form that allows 14 characters, i want the
grey shaded box to appear 14 characters long, instead of the default size. is
this possible? in word 2003. thanks in advance.

In the field's Properties dialog, if you leave the Default Text box empty,
Word will use five nonbreaking spaces to create the shading. You can enter
more nonbreaking spaces (Ctrl+Shift+spacebar) in the Default Text to extend
the shading. Be aware that the field uses proportionally sized characters
(for example, an m is wider than an i), so the spaces probably won't show
exactly how wide the entry can be.
