received errors saying that files were bad and needed to
insert Windows CD to install correct versions. Below are
some of the error messages from the event viewer. As I
mentioned before, I uninstalled the critical update and
things are back to normal.

The protected system file c:\winnt\system32\msacm32.dll
could not be verified as valid because Windows File
Protection is terminating. Use the SFC utility to verify
the integrity of the file at a later time.
There are 54 messages like this with different file names.

The protected system file icmp.dll was not restored to its
original, valid version because the Windows File
Protection restoration process was cancelled by user
interaction, user name is xxxxxxx. The file version of
the bad file is 5.0.2134.1.

I have a custom built computer, with w2k professional(3
years running no problem) its an intel celeron (1.7ghz),
an IMB deskstar HD(the old one). Its a home used computer,
not on a network. I connect to the internet with dial-up
through MSN. I had installed sp4 last fall and always keep
all the updates current prior to this week. I had it on
auto download for windows updates.

After the update installed it restarted, it couldnt get
past the loading settings stage at start up. Then it just
kept rebooting itself over and over. Safe mode and a w2k
repair from the CD didnt work. I ended up getting a new
hard drive and reinstalling w2k. Now I am having more
issues with the sp and errors on that clean hard drive...I
think I may switch to XP, that seems to be what all my
techy friends are telling me would take care of it. Any
other suggestions would be of great help.

Thanks, Lisa

I will give you as much as I can here at work without
access to my system. I was using automatic update so the
new updates were automatically downloaded and I just gave
the ok to install them.

My problem is that I can't boot at all. Blue Screen
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE errors.

My system is an Athlon 2600XP, 512MB, XFX5200 128mb video,
soundblaster live, home networked with one other pc
(linksys router), charter cable modem, Win2000 Pro with
all the latest patches, Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm, 120
gig, artec cdrom, sony cd-rw.

No problems here! The updates speak of vulnerabilities and attackers, but
before software can be vulnerable, the attacker has to get in! Do yourself
a favour and protect your system with a firewall, and make sure the ports
mentioned in the security updates are in fact blocked. Further, go into
'Component Services' and disable 'Automatic Updates'. (I never liked the
idea of the machine updating itself, without my knowledge) There are other
'Services' to disable, depending on your requirements. If you are not sure
disable one and reboot - and see what doesn't work

Don't use the Administrator account on the web. Make yourself a 'user'
account with just sufficient control for web, mail, etc. Use the Admin
account for admiinistration, only.

Celeron 800MHz, 512K, Win2K Pro SP4
Outlook Express 6, Internet Explorer 6
Kerio 4.0.14 personal firewall
No updates, critical or otherwise, I'll wait for SP5 :)

Btw, I'm somewhat of a newbie with this OS and have only been running
it for 2 months. I never saw these problems with the stable, crash-free
Win95 OS which I ran for over 5 years without a firewall.

critical updates installed prior to this one (automatic updates were
activated).
5. Method of update: How did you install 835732, from windowsupdate
website or by downloading the package from technet?

Windows Update.
6. Any special services configured on these machines: eg Internet
Connection Sharing or IIS or Routing and Remote Access.
Nothing.

7. Which process is taking more CPU?

Uhm, can't check this one now...
8. Any errors in event viewer?

Yes, events 51 and 55, alternating randomly. At least one at each reboot.
These events refer to disk/filesystem access problems, and indeed the
system can't access some files, and this causes every kind of random
troubles: chkdsk at reboot, unable to login because the profile can't be
written, applications (e.g. Norton Antivirus) not loading, volume control
(and audio driver?) not loading...

I uninstalled KB835732 and events and problems disappeared. I reinstalled
it and they appeared again.

Hi, Scott.

Why are you requesting this info? Where'd you get this list of
questions? Looks official, but it ain't -- I Googled you and you're
not an MS employee.

I haven't heard back from MS re: the status of all these postings other
than the fact that they are reviewing them.
In the meantime I want to post what appears to me to be two good ways to
handle the situation from a recovery standpoint...

Best of Luck - Scott

Emergency Security Patch removal process

After installing Security fix KB835732, the SYSTEM.exe process uses up
99% of CPU time, and make the system non-responsive.

1/2
To uninstall it, I did the following
(1) Boot into Safe mode.
(2) Run TaskManager - and noticed that the SYSTEM process
was using 99% of the CPU time.
(3) From TaskManager set the Priority of the EXPLORER
process to REALTIME, so that I can get to the control
panel.
(4) Run ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM from control panel.
(5) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority of
MSHTA.exe to REALTIME, so that the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM can
get some CPU time.
(6) Select and Remove "Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB835732".
(7) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority
of "SPUNIST.exe" to REALTIME, for the uninstall program to
run.
(8) Wait a few minutes, and the uninstall program will
eventually ask you to click FINISH to reboot the machine.
It took a long time for the system to shutdown and I just
unplugged the power.
(9) The machine should become normal after reboot.

2/2
The way Dr.Ray posted didn't do the trick for me, I just couldn't log on
even after trying for about 3 hours. I removed it this way:

1. Boot the system from the W2k installation cd and start the recovery
console
2. go to the directory %WINNT%\$UnInstallKB835732$\spunst
3. type: "Batch spuninst.txt". this will uninstall the SP but not all the
files will be copied (probably in use)
4. Reboot the computer (yes, it will start normaly)
5. Go the the configuration screen and remove the service pack from the
software list to replace the files that were in use

* Asus A7V8X-X
* Athlon 2700
* 512MB PC-3200 DDR
* Windows 2000 SP4
- What's 'Special Hardware'?

Acquired through Windows Update.
All other critical patches up to date.

Symptoms:

1) Elongated boot-up time. Hangs on W2K password screen for a full
minute.

2) Approximately 50% of Windows sounds disabled. No apparent affect on
other audio.

3) Inability to retain USB drivers; Re-installs drivers every time
device is connected.

4) Microsoft Activesync locks-up PDA after sync.

NONE (None), of the above problems were present prior to KB835732.
ALL (All), were eliminated by uninstalling KB835732.

Microsoft, in all their arrogance, has yet to acknowledge this
problem, or offer a fix.

An add-on async serial port card is verified to cause more than 20 warning
from PlugPlayManager with EventID:256 concerning time-out when boot
up. These warnings will disappear as soon as I disable the com3 and com4
ports in this card from the device manager, or uninstall KB835732.
